Study Full-time or Accept New Position?

Post by RamTitan » Tue Dec 01, 2015 11:49 am

I’m at a crossroads in my career, and if I could get some insight it would be of tremendous help.
My current full-time position's contract is about to end, and I was recently offered a position with a small agency that does publicity for motivational speakers. It’s a marketing assistant role which is in charge of the content marketing for these various speakers. Content marketing is something I’ve been trying to get into for some time, so it’s exciting to get a role in that field. However, it is technically a contractor position that is 30 hours a week with no benefits and low pay (but still more than I’m currently making).
With that said, I’m planning on sitting for the February LSAT. I’ve been testing all over the 166-170 range, and am trying to bump my score up considerably so I can be a competitive candidate for Harvard, Yale, and Stanford; my ultimate career goal as of right now is to gain admission to one of these institutions. Before the offer, I was planning on studying full-time for the Feb. test while interviewing for attractive positions and picking my career up afterwards.
I feel that I can potentially get a better opportunity (two major Fortune 500 companies recently have reached out to me to interview for communications roles), and that the position with the smaller agency may be more of a distraction to my studying than a benefit. However, I have been wanting a content marketing role for quite some time, and perhaps I don’t need to study full-time to get the score that I want? But then again, if going to a top 3 law school is my top priority, then shouldn’t my strategy and next steps reflect that? As you can see, I am playing the “what if?” game pretty hard right now. If you could tell me what you would do in my situation I’d more than greatly appreciate it.

Some additional information: I've been studying for about 10 hours a week since late May. I have a solid grasp of fundamentals, and am now at a stage where it's going to come down to taking lots and lots of practice tests.

Earlier today I felt I was leaning against the position, but now I'm feeling otherwise.

Good job. HYS will always be there and it sounds like you will genuinely enjoy the new position.
Thanks! I planned out a way to take at least 21 full timed practice tests over the next two months, so I'm still going to take the Feb. test. But you're definitely right about law school always being there.
