Suggestions on improving flaw questions?

Post by smilesmilesmile » Thu Nov 12, 2015 1:15 pm

Hi everyone
So I've been drilling LR recently, I'm still doing assumption questions, and I found out flaw is my weakest part
I'm pretty good at weaken questions, okayish at necessary assumptions and pretty good at sufficient assumptions

Now I've look at every explanation of flaw questions and understood them afterwards, but every time I'm trying to do new problems I still miss a lot...
So what I've been doing is to divide questions into groups of 26, and I include questions proportionately with their difficulties, and I always miss 9 out of 26. I also did research on flaw questions online, and found types of typical flaws. But when I'm actually doing it, I sometimes can't identify the types of flaws. At lot of times I've successfully eliminated the 3 wrong ones, but still chose the wrong answer out of the last two...

Any suggestions? Really appreciated

Hey,
You say that you are 'okayish' at necessary assumptions, but I think that actually might be the problem. I tried learning the common types of flaws too, but that doesn't always help because a lot of the flaws aren't one of those. Flaws always hinge on the necessary assumption. In other words, the argument is flawed BECAUSE it makes an assumption. So getting really good at identifying what the assumption will help out a lot. Always state that assumption in your head before even looking at the answer choices, and that will help you easily eliminate those tricky answer choices that are stated in a confusing way. I hope this helps and good luck

Hii, thanks a lot for the suggestion! I think that might be where I'm falling short, as sometimes I'm not that confident with finding gaps on the argument core. I'll go back to redo necessary assumptions, and hopefully that'll help.

I have another question, this is for everyone. So I've been doing LR for a month now, and I'm still just doing the assumption family questions...Am I too slow in drilling? I'm a senior at college, so sometimes I don't find lots of time for studying LSAT. I really want to get somewhat confident on LR this month, but the fact I'm still struggling over assumption questions makes me wonder if I'll be ready for full PT next month... And I signed up for the Feb LSAT, it seems like I don't even have much time left for the test...

Are you trying to go to law school in the fall of 2016? Don't sacrifice a good test score to get into law school for a certain time-frame.

I'm applying next year, so i'll go to law school in 2017.

But I'm still a little worried as I really want to get my lsat done by june, so I can apply early next year and have a better shot

I'd say pace yourself and take it in June. I've been studying since May for the Feb. test. No since in rushing anything; then, if worse comes to worse, you can retake it in October.

I would just say try to look at the passage in a more broad sense. Most passages are flawed. Find the conclusion, then find the support, and then figure out why the support does not fully prove the conclusion. Take a step back and do not worry so much about the specific details of the passage.
