LR is killing me

Post by LazyPaladin » Fri Oct 30, 2015 4:25 pm

In terms of prep, I was doing OK in LR (usually no more than -10 on my worst day) but on the actual test I went -14, and my previous take I was -21. I want to really get LR under my belt to the point where I'm able to consistently not miss more than 3/4 a section. I've read through Manhattan/The Trainer, also picked up the LRB just to round it out and I have Cambridge packets. It's not so much, at least from my perspective, the fundamentals that give me trouble. I can figure out (a) what the question stem is asking, (b) the conclusion & premises and (c) I can usually eliminate 2-3 wrong answers, but sometimes I feel as if I still don't "understand" the question or answer I'm choosing. I know I should be able to have concrete reasons for eliminating 4 and a reason for picking the right one, but sometimes it just doesn't happen.

I basically want to get it to where my LG are, where I can look at a game and say, it is X game, I need to do YZ, ABCD is impossible, therefore E, because T can't be third. The thought process in LR goes something like - it's a weaken, here's the argument, ABD are strengthens, C could be a weaken, but it doesn't really address X and E could be a weaken, but it doesn't sound as strong as C, meanwhile it addresses XY and then I'll get lost. There's no like, concreteness for when I get stuck. Granted, I'm sure we all have those questions, but I'd like it to be less than 14.

Did you take the drills in the trainer seriously and work through all of them?

Yes, for LR I did everything required and if for some reason I got something wrong I made sure to review why it was so.
