I'm putting down powerlifting under interests because it is.gamerish wrote:Well it's a fair bit better than putting SVU marathons and Doritos. If you're going to have an interests section, put your interests. Reading is hardly so awful an interest to have, just make it clear you're not talking about Green Eggs and Ham and Twilight. I doubt anyone reading your resume is expecting deep sea diving in the Arabian peninsula or something.RZ5646 wrote:That's a perfect example of an interest that might as well be breathing: "You're a college-educated person applying to one of the world's greatest academic institutions, and you read books?? You need to at the least be a good faker or truly read books.

Just to be clear, specific, interesting, and non-off-putting reading interests are fine. The guy I quoted just said "putting 'reading' on your resume", and "reading" by itself is undeniably an awful resume interest item.

I think you could be more neutral and avoid sounding vindictive. If you keep the other person's story more narrow and focus broadly on yourself, it'll be alright. Try writing a draft and then posting it on the PS thread. People will be very honest about how they feel, especially if you're a new poster or post anonymously lolpleadthafif wrote:Well I want to write about someone I know who was wronged and the perp was never brought to justice, and how that combined with a personal inclination towards service and wanting a career that impacts others and isn't self-serving, lead me to consider the criminal justice system as a career path. I'm concerned it would sound kind of vindictive though, which I'm not at all. Thoughts?mist4bison wrote:I think this depends on how you write it. You want your PS to be about you, which I think can be done while writing about an influential person, but I could also see you getting lost in the PS, you know? Just got to be careful to make sure you're still present in the PS.pleadthafif wrote:Is it ok for your PS to be about an influential person in your life?

100% agree. I think vagueness in general though is really bad for a resume.RZ5646 wrote:Just to be clear, specific, interesting, and non-off-putting reading interests are fine. No, that's fair. I get what you're saying. Whenever I read an interests section with "reading," I always fuck with the person because I assume they just used that interest to fill up space.RZ5646 wrote:Just to be clear, specific, interesting, and non-off-putting reading interests are fine. It's pretty specific and I feel that it might get me identified. :-/mist4bison wrote:Oh that's awesome. Saying that you like sports, music, cooking, working out, running, volunteering, the outdoors, etc., is pointless because those sorts of things are already expected of you. You might as well say "breathing."
One of my friends worked at a prestigious big law firm and he said all of them asked him about things from his interest section (one thing specifically he said came up, but won't mention it explicitly). It wasn't anything ridiculous, either. I think it gives a better idea of you as a person, but I agree if its insanely generic things it may be useless.

It really sucks when your main interests are playing video games or watching TV. Can't put those on a resume...

Re: The Official October Waiter's Oasis
how much do you guys think volunteering helps for law school, grad school and simply applying for jobs? This seems so debated. As a recent UG grad, I defiantly have been volunteering a lot but I am not really sure how much it helps applications for these three things.

Volunteering is like very low-level work experience. So it's slightly useful for getting a job and probably meaningless for LS admissions.flash21 wrote:how much do you guys think volunteering helps for law school, grad school and simply applying for jobs? What about these holistic LS's ? Is it all a lie ? I was always skeptical.RZ5646 wrote:Volunteering is like very low-level work experience. Not sure. B and YS might think it's cool, but then again many of your competitors will have it too.flash21 wrote:What about these holistic LS's ? Is it all a lie ?
