First 10 LR in 10 minutes necessary?
I tried to implement this tactic in my recent LR pt section and ended up going -9...I usually go -4 or -5. In instances where I've scored higher in LR, I take longer on the first 15 questions and am forced to hustle at the end. Is it more likely that I went -9 because this was a completely new section or because I tried to force myself to use that tactic?(Some of the LR sections where I've scored higher on had questions I seen before but only remembered faintly). Kinda nervous since the exam is in 2 weeks...

Go to mike kim's website and use that timing method, I think its more reasonable. I think he reccomends by Q 15 to be 18 minutes deep

Just gotta do what works for you. For many people 10 in 10 makes sense, but if your results are worse, there's no reason to do that -- after all, it is an arbitrary cutoff.
I liked that method because I was less stressed for the rest of the section when I had the assurance that I had 25 minutes for 14-16 questions.

Re: First 10 LR in 10 minutes necessary?
I have found a good tactic to be to try & do the first 10 questions in 10 minutes, the next 10 in 15 (+/-1.5 mins) & the balance left for the remaining 5-6 plus a brief double checking of answers.
Sometimes there will be a question or two in the first 10 that is more difficult, so just adjust your time accordingly. I agree with RareExports that it is all arbitrary, of course. Use this as a starting point, since it is what most sites and test takers will espouse, but only as long as it doesn't hurt your score!

I just took a completely new test. Went back to my normal pacing and went 20/25 and 19/26. I'm assuming the next step in progression for my LR sections would be to be able to do them faster so that I can check my work afterwards.

Re: First 10 LR in 10 minutes necessary?
I don't want to state the obvious, but for me at least, I made my leap on completing LR sections -3/2 in 30/25 mins., was when I stopped re-reading the stimulus and making sure I breezed through the easy questions quickly, leaving the parallel Q's last, and pre-phrasing. If you find yourself constantly re-reading the stimulus and having to understand the argument, getting through questions quickly with a high degree of accuracy will be tough. I wouldn't say first 10 in 10 minutes is necessary but you definitely want to make sure you have a good amount of time for the difficult questions.

You don't want to lose sight of the fact that getting the gimme questions is generally necessary to breaking a 170. The ten in ten is good if it works for you, but not if it leads to you missing a question you wouldn't otherwise miss.
