Struggling terribly with logical reasoning

Post by splitsohard » Wed Aug 19, 2015 10:54 pm

Hello everyone,

I just studied using power score bible and I keep struggling with logical reasoning. I was wondering if you had any general advice/tactics for developing better skills or even comprehension of the right answer in the series of answer choices? Anything would really help.

Thank you

I actually got worse when I started using the Powerscore LR. Their method of explaining how to attack "weaken" questions confused me. Do you have the Trainer? I'd stick with that or order it if you don't have it already.

And I also got the Manhattan LR but the latest edition is full of editing mistakes so maybe try the 3rd edition.

Yeah I was able to get the trainer actually! The questions that I consistently miss are "must be true/support" questions, but everything else I generally tend to understand without powerscore. I had previously gone through Kaplan strategy books, and while some of their strategies weren't the best, their explanations for weaken questions were great in my opinion.
I'm just not sure how to find material that is straight to the point about must be true/strengthen questions and won't confuse me.

When you are reviewing wrong answers make sure you understand why your answer was wrong. If you can find why four of them are wrong then you are golden. It will come with practice. After awhile they all follow a familiar pattern.

Same thing with me -- elimination helps me work through the questions pretty well too.

Yeah I went through that phase with the power score bible. I would suggest prephrasing on those questions, and taking a look at Manhattan LR as well that really helped. While you can't come up with a solid prediction for these questions always, I think about inference questions in terms of which way the stimulus is going. In other words, does the stimulus seem to suggest that something will be needed, does it suggest that something is good or bad.

Yeah when I first started prep, must be true/inference questions threw me for a loop probably because I had spent most of my time honing my assumption question approach. Inference questions require a different method from assumption-like questions: to infer, you must pick an answer choice that is necessarily and absolutely true, given the information in the stimulus, in the form of a necessary consequence; whereas, for assumption questions you are working within the confines of the argument. Also read closely, since modifiers, quantities and other such modal operators are extremely important for all questions but specifically they generally have a significant impact on inference questions.

Also, like everyone has said before, go with the trainer first since it offers a great foundation and general overview of all the sections, along with the necessary mental approaches. Thereafter, move onto Manhattan LR and if you want to supplement it with Powerscore, then that works too.
