When you say "drilling," how do you drill?

Post by sarahsala » Wed Aug 12, 2015 7:55 am

Hi all,

I bought 1-38 LR type sorted package. I found people recommend to drill questions especially the question types you are weak at.
But when you say "drilling" do you mean we do all questions in the package or stop when you feel you know enough about the question types? Or just certain levels etc...
How do you use those packages?
Do you drill different question types each day or different types in one day?

Thanks in advance!

No you should do them up to the point where your accuracy is high. So for example, I do.a set of twenty in a question type. I do 5 questions per level of difficulty. For me to go to the next level I have to get at least 4 out of 5 correct. Some people do more than twenty questions at a time, but it's kinda ur choice. I like to focus on fewer so I can really get a good understanding for those questions. Above all, you need to make sure that your accuracy is getting better, and you're understanding why wrong answers are in fact wrong.

Got it, thanks Itowns1 :)
By the way, when I review, should I review the ones I got correct?
I have done some PTs a few yrs ago, untimed, and wonder whether I should review those ones I got correct as well, or just review the ones I got wrong.
Since it is a while ago, I do not remember all of the questions, but I think I will get correct some of them again if I re-do them.
What do you think?

Yes, reinforce your reasoning for why you got the question right. Often we get questions right because we just have an intuitive sense for what the right answer is instead of having a solid understating of what the issue is, and how to solve it correctly. So go back and make sure you got the answer right because you understood the logic of the stimulus

I have been working through the LR packets untimed, making sure I completely understand the structure of each stimulus, in addition to fully understanding why each answer choice is either correct or incorrect. I think working through the packets slowly allows you to build up positive habits that you can use when taking preptests under actual timed conditions: understanding the logical role of each sentence in the stimulus, maintaining a critical mindset, etc. Basically, think through each question with the same meticulousness as you would a question you got wrong on a preptest. Doing so will help improve both your speed and accuracy: I started finishing LR sections with about 7 or 8 minutes to spare after drilling in this way.
