Getting from 162 to 170+

Post by alkaseltzerx » Sat Jul 25, 2015 6:38 pm

Right now I'm generally scoring anywhere from 166 to 168 when I do a practice test completely untimed. When I time myself I get anywhere from a 162 to 165. My worst section is generally RC but sometimes I'll mess up a LR. LG are normally going well for me. I've already read the LSAT Trainer and Powerscore books, and I have all the PT's available, so I just wanted to ask a couple questions:

To start, I had no idea about the "blind review" method. I have taken around 15-20 tests and I'm thinking about just going through all of them and reviewing them all in depth. That'd require laying off on the PTs for a bit while I catch up. Thoughts?

1. I'm assuming (with study) that I'll have an okay chance getting into the 170s before October if I study hard, correct?
2. Is the best use of my time right now continuing to do untimed tests until all my answers are around -2, -1, -0? Or should I throw in timed tests occasionally?
3. When you find yourself doing a reading comp section and you realize that every question is way harder than it should be, meaning I probably didn't read it correctly, what's the best route to correct this during the test [re-read everything?]?
4. I'm assuming it varies based on the person, but if anyone knows on average how much studying someone should do to get from a 162 to a 170+ with a little more than 2 months time I'd be very grateful. My plan was to do 3-4 PT's (untimed until -2ish, then timed from then on) a week with detailed review on any questions I missed.
5. With blind review, if you literally can't figure out why one answer is wrong (or right), what steps would you suggest taking to remedy this?
6. Are there any other study techniques like the "blind review" that I should know about!?

If anyone has any other tips (or wants to direct me to good posts to read) I'd be very grateful! I'm new here and still sifting through all the information.

One thing here: the spread between your untimed and timed work is not very wide. I would actually focus on accuracy here. You aren't going to be able to get into the 170s timed until you can do it untimed. I'd start by taking untimed PTs with lots of review on the stuff you've been struggling with until you are hitting upper 170s before putting the clock back on. I think you'll find you're able to get the trickiest questions (a few of which you have to get right to get in the 170s), then you'll be able to start seeing some faster movement in the timed testing. If you are working really hard for accuracy and reviewing thoroughly, it won't take many untimed PTs until you hit this mark consistently. If you have trouble with that, then maybe some remedial work reviewing the basics and drilling the difficult level questions is what you need.
