Improving a 167 to a 172?

Post by MrBalloons » Thu Jul 02, 2015 12:17 am

I got a 167 (a few points beneath my practice average) on this June's test with solid but not complete prep, using PowerScore books and about 4 practice tests. I want to get this up to a 172, for various reasons.

What's the best way for a pretty high scorer to bump up a few points? Options I've considered:

1) 7Sage online prep
2) Private tutoring through PowerScore or some such a place
3) Drill baby drill with Cambridge books and forget practice tests/curriculum/etc.

Which of these sounds the best? Or what other plan?

You should give us a breakdown of what you're missing. What are you missing? 167 who crashes and burns on LG is totally different from 167 who aces LG but gets like -5 on every LR and RC

My typical experience is a like a -6 thru -8 on LG and about -6 thru -8 on the rest.

I did better on LG and worse on LR on actual June LSAT, but this LG section was pretty funky, I thought. Not representative of the LG sections I've done more frequently.

This is definitely true, but I would say that, if you were PTing a few points above a 167, you can probably get that up into the 170s reliably with self-study.

I've always been pretty good with RC and have gone -0 on about half the sections I've done. Which I gather is the hardest of the three sections to improve on.

So I just feel like I'm leaving a lot of points on the table.

I don't have a strategy that I consciously use--I've never looked at any study material on it. But that kinda fits with my model of how RC works. I'm sure there are plenty of counter examples, but it seems to me like a lot of the people that do well on it tend to "just get it."

That said, once I find the courage to get back to studying, I'll pay more attention to how I do RC. Even if I "don't have a strategy," I'm sure I do and just don't realize it.

Drill LG with Cambridge using 7Sage methods (free videos).

Yup. I improved 8 points by doing this. LG was originally my worst section but by the end of my second round of prep, it was my favorite. It's really about drilling again and again until you build speed and confidence. Buy the Cambridge packets (for all three sections, if possible) and focus more on drilling and figuring out how to approach each type of question. My approach was to spend most of my time during the week drilling and only a small amount taking PTs, and I found that really helpful, as I already had read the PowerScore Bibles and had built an LSAT "base" from the first time I took it.
