Picking LSAT Tutor: HLS Grad vs. 180 Forum

Some months ago on the Denver Craigslist there were two tutors advertising at the same price. I was randomly thinking about it today. I wanted to throw it out to others:

If you had to pick between two tutors and all you know is the following

1) HLS Grad, 99th percentile score
2) Scored a 180

Which would you pick and why?

I don't think where either of them went to school is relevant at all. Both of them did well, but the real question is how much experience they have with teaching LSAT prep.

All depends on teaching style, effectiveness of delivery and whatnot.

Also wide discrepancies within that 99% percentile....could be anywhere from a 172 to 180.

not implying that a 180 teacher would make for a better tutor than a 172 ( if that was the first person's score).. but all things equal the 180 would have more mastery of the exam.

I also wouldn't be too concerned with HLS degree unless he plans on giving admissions advice.....if the 180 tutor was just as good with LSAT teaching, I could care less if they went to HYS or a T50 school, or didn't go to law school at all

i wouldn't take test prep from a 180 honestly. he/she may know the test better, but has a vested interest in keeping the 180 club exclusive. you will probably only get prepped to 179 levels.

Probably the 180 guy, but really this is a terrible way to pick a tutor. You want to choose the best LSAT teacher, not necessarily the best LSAT taker. Look for reviews or ask for a free trial session or something so you can evaluate their teaching ability.

Though I guess I would question why an HLS graduate is putting LSAT tutoring ads on Craigslist instead of working at some great job.

I'd pick the 180 person for two reasons. First, 99th percentile could be just a 172, and if your tutor got a 172, then good luck getting above that. Moreover, people who score 175+ will write their actual score instead of "99th percentile" because it looks a lot better. The only reason someone would write 99th percentile is if their number score looks WORSE than "99th percentile", i.e. a 172ish.

Second, sure they might be an HLS grad, but how well did they do in HLS? If they graduated top of their class and have a really successful career now, then sure, it might be helpful to go with them because you could get some tips for law school along the way. However, this person's trying to tutor people in LSAT after graduating from HLS, so unless they've been competent enough to start their own prep company, their career is probably not ideal. You can do better.

I'd go with the 180 tutor. HLS tutor seems sketch af.

at the same time though the 180 could have had lucky guesses and been avg PTing around the same scores. Then theres also the possibility that the 172 is just naturally better at teaching the concepts and techniques than applying them theirselves under timed conditions while the 180'er just happened to be good with tests and logic and isn't very good at getting points across and helping things make sense...

as previously stated, there's not enough info on either to give an opinion without making baseless assumptions

Also 174 is the threshold for 99th.

LSAT score alone does not indicate how well the individual can convey the concepts. The same could be said about what school the person attended. The guy with a 175 may simply be better at explaining the concepts in a clear and concise manner than the 180 guy, and the guy who went to Columbia may be better at explaining and teaching than the HLS guy. You are using the wrong criteria in this search. Of course you want someone who has a good score and went to a good school (though this is obviously less important than LSAT score for your purposes). But there is no need to nitpick to that extent.
