Should I retake in Dec? Forum

Hi,

I was disappointed by my September LSAT score, which was a 166. That score was lower than any of my practice tests and I am planning on applying to T14 schools. Should I retake in December? I'm not sure how to weigh the possible advantage of a higher LSAT score with the later admissions cycle.

For context, I have a 3.97 from a good university, graduated with two majors and a minor in six semesters, am currently in Teach for America, and I am finishing up my masters degree. Obviously, part of the issue with my first LSAT score is that I'm insanely busy. Looking back, I did not do enough timed tests and/or study as much as I should have. At the same point, I'm still very busy, and I would hate to somehow screw myself over and score lower (cue panic attack).

I was hoping to get into an upper T14 and Chicago is my dream school.

Is it worth it to retake? Any opinions or advice would be WONDERFULLY appreciated !

Yup, definitely. If you can make time to do as much as you can to ensure an improvement.

Yes, you should retake if you 1) really want to get into a T14 and 2) think that you can commit as much time as possible, without sacrificing your health, to studying. Sticking with the 166 makes it harder for you to get in and you'll end up paying sticker at a lot of schools.

If you tell us the materials you used and your study schedule the first time around, we might be able to help you figure out a plan of attack.

Always retake if you aren't satisfied with your score:)

Especially with those goals and that GPA -- a 3.97 is a horrible thing to waste and while it's a bummer to go back to studying, the law school you attend is a pretty huge deal and definitely worth the pain. You're just a few points away from where you need to be for Chicago. I say go for it again and godspeed.
