Anyone mind critiquing my LSAT study plan

Post by iluvcash » Mon Oct 13, 2014 1:32 am

I plan to take the June 2015/February 2015 test. My diag was a 153. I have begun studying LR as it is my weakest section. I am following the 7Sage course and the Trainer.
I'm focusing on learning the LR question types and will be drilling, drilling, and drilling some more combined with blind review until I'm at least -0 to -4 on LR. Afterwards, I plan to do the same thing with LG, learning the question types/strategies, and drilling as many games as necessary until I get a sufficient score. Finally, I'll begin taking full timed PTs as I gear up to take either the Feb or June test.

Pretty simple right? Does this seem like the way to go?

On my Diag test (June 2007 test), I missed 15 LR, 11 LG, and 9 RC.

This seems to be a fairly typical schedule. As you know, LG can easily be learned to a point where you can get a -0 or -1 with practice. I suggest buying the RC packets as well as do a few passages a day to improve RC. I'd aim for February and set your sights on it now so you can stay motivated. The February Thread is starting to become active as well. Good luck.

I may be in the minority here, but I would advise that you study both LR and LG at the same time. It's more time consuming and slow, but its better than studying for one section and then studying another and at the end when you go to put it all together you realize you forgot or aren't as sharp on one or the other sections. Example: I began my prep with the LR Bible (I figured it was the hardest so why not take care of it first) and I spent 3 months reading and drilling through the bible. After that I did a month of RC and then I began the LG Bible. About a month into the LG Bible (2 months removed from having done the LR Bible) I got the Cambridge LR Packet and took a short drill session. I couldn't believe how difficult the questions were and how many I was completely clueless on. It felt like I had forgot everything I learned in the LR Bible. Now, it might just be me (after all it's been about 5 years since I graduated from college) but it seems that if you don't consistently drill what you learn, you lose some understanding and practice. For that reason, I would suggest you learn and drill both LR and LG as you go through the Trainer and 7Sage. It doesn't have to be every day; for instance, what I do is I spend a week on LR and a week on LG and I do an RC section every day to keep me on my toes. I've found that this works best for me because you learn as you go and you don't have time to forget anything. More importantly, you should get into the practice of doing LR and LG at the same time, since that's how the LSAT's set up. Let me know...

Disclosure: I didn't read your study plan.

Having/making/sticking to a strict study plan is a bit of a challenge, as you will progress at varying speeds the more you study. Meaning, say you have 3 days scheduled for linear LG's but it only takes you 1 day to nail them, or it takes you 10 days. It will be constantly changing. I guess that's my point you need to be willing to alter your plan as needed. This was something that gave me fits at the beginning of my study, I felt like if i didn't stick exactly to my schedule I was screwed. Don't go too far into specifics, but plan for weeks as you go and even days. Towards the end of my study I would decide what I was going to do the day before.
