Applying Bibles to Test

Post by Lying Lawyer » Sat Sep 20, 2014 1:42 pm

I am going through the bibles and I am using the cambridge packets. As I go through the packets I am trying to apply some of what the bibles teaches you to find the correct answer. For an assumption question for example you negate the answer choice. If the conclusion falls apart it's correct. My problem is when I'm drilling this seems easy to do, but during PT's (this is my second one) I have a tough time being able to do it. It's like I can't do the task. I don't understand. I am not even timing myself very strictly since it's early. I am testing in December, so I have time, but it's just very frustrating. Does this happen to anyone else, or any advice anyone can offer. I also picked up the Manhattan reasoning book. I've heard great things about it and it's a great supplement for the bible, but haven't gotten to that one yet. Thanks.

Hello! When you are doing your PT's, are you doing it timed or untimed? I suggest taking it untimed. You want to first strive for accuracy and then speed.

For what it's worth, I prefer the Manahattan LR so much more... I read 2/3 of the LR Bible before giving up. I didn't like how it focuses so hard on diagramming and lists of short-cuts. With Manhattan LR, you learn a different approach by identifying the core argument. If you know the relationship between the premise(s) and the conclusion, you can solve almost all necessary/sufficient assumptions, flaw, weaken, strengthen, principle support. Although I would still read the part of the LR Bible where it teaches you how to diagram conditional and formal logic, it's helpful for the super hard problems.
