Preptest 27 Sec-4 Question 6

Post by ltowns1 » Sat Sep 13, 2014 6:56 pm

At first I was looking for something that said the trampled leaves are destroyed, and at the time, I thought that (C) was the closet thing that I could see which made sense. Now I believe I get why (E) is correct, and (C) is not. But just to make sure, does this question reside on the necessary condition of the butterflies falling off the tree?

First let's understand the argument. We're told that butterflies are endangered by woodcutters, and that tours are being organized in an attempt to prevent the woodcutters from endangering the butterflies. The problem is that the tourists themselves are endangering those butterflies that fall from the trees, so the passage concludes that therefore the tourists are endangering the entire population of the monarch butterflies.

It's important to keep in mind that the facts only provide us with a claim that the tourists are endangering butterflies that fall from trees. But assume that the # of butterflies that fall from trees compared to the # of total butterflies in the population is extremely small. In that case, the fact that those particular butterflies were being harmed by the tourists would not validate a conclusion that the tourists are endangering the population.

So in other to determine if the tourists are endangering the population as a whole, it would be helpful to know the proportion of butterflies that fall from trees. (Choice E).
