I need simple advice

Post by alexrodriguez » Sat Sep 06, 2014 8:05 pm

when it comes to LR something happens to me when I'm going through the questions.

It's like something takes over my mind and easy questions become a Mt. Everest conquest...

today for instance... I had -18 combined on both LR section... it bothers me because I really know the material...

I've reviewed all the questions three times now and there was only one (domesticated wolves) that I legitimately found to be somewhat difficult upon review.

I shouldn't be getting more than 3 or 4 wrong in any LR section. There just aren't that many difficult questions. Occasionally I do have really great sections and its because I do know the material, but I'm susceptible to this unknown phenomenon of screwing everything up because of X.

It's not really my nerves I don't think... maybe it has something to do with timing, but not really. I usually have 3 to 5 minutes left towards the end.

It has to do with clarity. I think. Sometimes I get a bad reading of a stimulus. I've had sections where the bulk of my questions wrong are in the first 10 questions which are generally easier. Today I missed the first question of a section. It had to do with acid rain, spruces firs and sugar maples. You may remember it. Why did I get this question wrong? You have to be practically brain dead to get this question wrong.... I make these sorts of errors often. My raw scores fluctuate often between 10 to 15 points.

I have all the right skills, something terrible is taking over my mind.

Please help

Trust me when I say it's because you don't know the material as well as you think to you do. Go back to the basics, drill every question type, do a thorough in-depth review of every question.

ETA: Do a blind review and see how you fare. If you change a lot of your answers to the correct one, then you know your issue is with the time crunch. If that's the case, then I would work on becoming psychologically impervious to the time pressure of the exam ie) take your time with the questions.

this used to happen to me a lot Louie, I dont know if you've been doing this a lot but you should drill LR untimed and get to know the questions inside and out, and review like crazy on the ones you don't get all right

You're probably rushing and thus do not understand the arguments.

Try this idea from KDLMaj: Instead of getting to every question in the section, go at a slower pace by doing this: For every argument, repeat it back to yourself once you read it.

You can do this by saying to yourself, "Ok, premises therefore conclusion"" or "conclusion because premises".

You can't answer a question about an argument you don't understand.

LR is the section I have improved the most on and is now my best section. You can do it. Just back up and slow down and understand what you're doing, and what you're doing wrong.
