Frequency of Diagramming for LR

Post by ltowns1 » Thu Sep 04, 2014 11:58 am

I was wondering for anyone who has scored well on the LSAT, or taken a recent test, how much diagramming did you guys actually do on question types other than "MSS, MBT, and Parallel Reasoning/flaw questions?

Those are really the only times I've ever needed to do diagramming to be honest. Sometimes on principle questions too.

At the outset, I would recommend diagramming all questions with conditional statements. This will help you practice the skills.

Down the line, however, most people's written diagramming will taper down to the list you mentioned. Even at that point, some sort of "diagramming" remains useful for all conditionals, even if it just goes on in your head.

I havent sat the official exam, but I typically get anywhere from 0-2 wrong on timed LR (unless im tired...then I bomb the section) and I may diagram once. I only diagram when the stimulus is so confusing that I need to see it on paper for it to sink in and stick while I figure out the answer. Usually it will be for a super wordy stimulus full of super wordy formal logic statements. Those circumstances can come along with any type of question (although, I havent seen any in Point at Issue, Main Point, or Flaw, for example). I find that really nailing my focus allows me to follow most LR questions without having to write them down, but as soon as I come across one and I start thinking "What the hell did I just read?" And Im not tired, I know I need to make some quick notes to keep track of the info.
