Best way to review Reading Comp sections?

Post by john2018 » Sun Aug 31, 2014 11:41 pm

Obviously this has been touched on before, but what have some of you more successful LSAT takers (170s) done to review the reading comp sections? Gracias.

Scored 174. Reading Comp was my worst section. I read part (wish I'd read more) of PowerScore's Reading Comp Bible and it had some decent tips.

I think the thing that improved my score the most was taking a few seconds after each paragraph to mentally summarize/review the main idea. Definitely helped me retain more information and when I needed to go back to the passage it took me less time to find the section I needed.

I consistently score in the high-160s with a consistent -7 to -9 in RC. Been a real struggle and if I could only perfect this I could shoot into the 170s.

read the economist. after each article immediately write down, main point, authors purpose, structure, all details you remember. after doing this over and over again you will start to intuitively look for these things.

More specifically, how to do you guys review your Reading Comp sections from practice tests? That is, do you simply find the supporting line(s) from the passage for every correct answer? Do you write out why each wrong answer is wrong? Do you do something else entirely?

I have a very good idea how to review Logical Reasoning and Logic Games, but Reading Comp seems to be a different ballgame. Perhaps it's not, and I should treat it just like any other review, slowly going over why each correct answer is correct and why each wrong answer choice is wrong. That's what I've been doing, but didn't know if there was a better way to review RC passages.

One thing I do when I review is I try to gauge how much of the information ended up being just filler info. You should never skip over anything when drilling an RC passage, but if you can train yourself to recognize what might be filler and what is important you will be able to save time and resist going overkill with the annotations (if that's your style).

It was definitely not enough to just go over the correct answer (although that is important). I would make sure I understood why each of the incorrect answers was incorrect.

Also I would look at the other answers and see if I could find a relationship between them that I could have used to help me. For example if I answered the question about the main point of the passage correctly it could provide information that would help me determine the correct answer (or some of the incorrect answers) for a question where I have to make an inference about the author.
