Smarter to work faster?

Post by ilikebaseball » Sat Jul 05, 2014 4:21 pm

I've wondered if anyone has ever done this. It seems like one of the greatest LSAT problems is time on test day, because people always feel that time is faster when its the real deal. Would it be wise to PT under more stressful conditions? Such as 32 minute sections. That way, test day is made a little more easier. If you finish under that time on test day you can always go back on any unsure answers

Not saying I'm doing this now, but just wondering if anyone has ever done it and whether its effective. Don't necessarily try to replicate test day conditions...make them even worse I guess is the point I'm asking

The 7sage iphone proctor app has options for decreasing section time down to a minimum of 28 minutes.
I can see how it would be beneficial to decrease time shortly before the exam. I wouldn't start too far out because I see the goal of drilling before the month before the test is to learn how to do problems with consistent accuracy. However time is not an issue for me, it might be helpful to start drilling with time restrictions earlier if you anticipate time stress being an issue.

edit: My plan for the 2 weeks before the test is to do 8-10 section practice tests with 30 minute timing.

no
your pacing strategy would be different with 32 minutes than 35 minutes

many ppl, at least starting out, do something like 15qs in 15 min, then 10qs in 20 min
limiting yourself to 32 minutes would throw everything off, you wouldn't be learning how to pace properly w a 35 min time frame

I mean, you could try to do this. I don't see any harm in attempting to finish the sections in 30 minutes instead of 35 once you're close to test day and have the basics down. Make sure that you don't do this when you're first starting to take tests since you want to get a feel for the rhythm of the exam and, regardless of how much time you'd prefer to give yourself to finish, you'll have 35 minutes for every section on the real thing. Also, you don't want to get into a bad habit of cutting corners in order to meet your own, artificial deadline.

Remember, accuracy is the most important thing. It's much better to do 23/25 questions correctly and have to guess on the last two than to do 20/25 correctly in 30 minutes, especially if you're shooting for a score in the 170s. That said, the best case scenario is obviously 25/25, so if you think that speeding up can help you get to that point, by all means try.
