Looking for advise on my approach to lsat prep....172+ GIH Forum

Hello, Im beginning to study for my LSAT that I plan to take in December. Any while there is a lot of the info online I would like some input from those of you have recently taken it or are scoring high on the practice tests. Im shooting for 172+ I am aware thats pretty high aspirations but I believe it is obtainable.

So for those of you who have scored 172+ what was your plan of attack for mastering this behemoth of an exam.
Did you self teach or take a course?
should I take a test before I begin my studies or after?
what would you say was the mos effective thing you did while studying?

and just any other general info you can give me would be greatly appreciated. THanks all

If you want to score a 172+ you're going to want to go in with the mindset that you can only miss around 8-10 questions.

For me, there were five essential books for prep, starting with Mike Kim's "The LSAT Trainer" and "The Next 10 Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests." Once you have the basic idea of how the test works by completing the Trainer along with the work assigned then you should begin drilling through "Cambridge LSAT Logical Reasoning By Type" and "Cambridge LSAT Logic Games By Type." Then, leading up to the test you should begin doing the most recent full practice tests under strict, timed conditions until you take the real thing.

Studying for the LSAT is a lot more simple than people make it out to be - just like anything else in life to be successful at it requires a smart, consistent, and dedicated work ethic. This forum is also a gold mine.. filled with tidbits of incredibly useful information given by some very smart people. Also read the testimonials of people who have made 180s, they will get you in a mindset that shows that the sky really is the limit on this test and that a 180 is truly attainable.

First thing would be to get out of the "debt" mentality. Just because you have a low GPA, so you donot need to be desperate for a 172+. This way you are putting more pressure on yourself. For most people this way of thinking wouldn't work. In short: Forget past failures.
Take LSAT on a blank slate and see where you stand and how far you can go. Hope making some sense here. It's really strange as to how much importance people give to GPAs. Unless you are going for a PhD, your future professional success is independent of your GPA(I am not talking about admissions but professional performance).

I think your prep will depend on what your starting point is... Have you taken your first timed prep or a diagnostic yet? I am also hoping to be a heavy splitter, and I'm training myself, but I made that decision based on my first PT, knowing that I was already relatively comfortable with all four sections on the test.

While I completely agree with you on most of this Im a pressure situation type guy. Under pressure is when I perform the best! but it is nice to sit and think my past failures can be over written by this lsat. Like the clean slate concept

I can't imagine it was easy to concentrate! I'd give it another go in a library/quiet place when you're fully awake and see how that goes. Don't worry about time as much, but do note where you're at when you hit the 35 minute mark so you can see what sections need improvement.

I'm a weirdo who likes standardized tests and I got a 170 on my first PT (it was untimed). I have terrible uGPA to compensate for, so I need as close to 180 as possible. I think the best thing to do is take a serious practice test and look for people on TLS who went from your PT score to your target score.

Oh ya i forgot to mention it was timed lol! I was wondering do most people time their Diagnostic or know? jw also Im so glad to hear there are others like myself suffering from atrocious uGPA's praying to make up for it with killer LSAT grades!

I think the general consensus is accuracy first, then gradually work on speed. Both only come with tons of practice.

Well now i know lol Ill take another one next week. Im a fan of the timed though! it makes me feel competitive hahah
