advice for LGs on recent PTs? (late 50s, post-60s)

Post by primordialnoodle » Sun Jun 01, 2014 10:04 pm

I was wondering if anyone has any advice on tackling the LGs for recent PTs. I can do LGs on older PTs with no problem, but it's been really tough for me to see inferences in these more recent games. And I'm slow on creating hypotheticals and brute forcing.

What should I do to improve? Does anyone have good material that I can do further practice on? I'm taking the test in 1 week!

Thanks :)

Seconded. LG section on PT 68 was truly a nightmare.

Missed games 3 and 4 almost entirely.

Spend more time analyzing the game parameters and rules before deciding how to organize and start writing out your master set-up diagram. Analyzing for and 'seeing' the big picture logical structure of each game, before putting pencil to paper to start writing out your set-up, is essential for figuring out a good way to organize your set-up that will be helpful for figuring out deductions and solving questions efficiently.

Any particular types of games or examples from the recent tests that threw you off? It's important to figure out which features of the games you overlooked or didn't prioritize but should have and everything else that gave you trouble with each specific game to find patterns in your troubles so you know what to fix.

With only a week left there's no time to learn new methods, so the best thing you can do is try to figure out your specific game type/variation weaknesses and then quickly brush up on those types/variations with focused drilling and review.

What are your current timed PTs LG section raw score ranges in terms of how many missed per LG section? Are you missing 3-5 questions per LG section, 6-10, 11+?

My suggestion:

Do a game that's hard for you. Watch the free 7sage video for the game. Do the game again right away, later that day, or the next day. (If you're not doing the game again right away, move to the next game right away.) Repeat this cycle for every game that's hard for you that you can.

If you have time, cycle through the entire series again, doing every single game on your own. If a game still gives you trouble, watch the 7sage video for it and try it again.

The 7sage videos are gold. They'll really help you see how to approach games.

If you have questions about specific games, ask them on TLS, either in a new thread or in one of the threads by people who answer questions (Blueprint, Manhattan LSAT, etc.) jeffort has his own thread now, too, sort of.

Also, if you're far from where you think you can be, you may want to rethink taking the June test.

Best of luck!

I'm missing 2-4 questions/LG section. Considering I get -1/-2 on each LR or RC section and the fact that LG are supposed to be "freebie" points, I really want to raise my LG score!

My weaknesses: one line sequencing and conditional sequencing. I also find that I either make careless errors, or I spend too long checking my main diagram/each question and have to rush through the last game.

I also did PT 68 today and game 4 killed me. redoing it, the procedure was clear, but as I was PTing, I just missed those inferences.

Play around with Superprep B for some good practice with logic games.

4th one is a brute force type game.

just look at where s and q can go. s cannot be in two because of the rules. the wildlife (y?) splits the other magazines in certain ways.

3rd one just remember some math.

check 7sage.

Especially in the newer games, inferences are a must. You have to make sure you are inferring everything before starting- contrapositives are very important, for example. An example of this, on the most basic level, is if A comes before B, then a can't be last and B can't be first. Making inferences is necessary to fully master the most recent games, especially because they don't have many premises anymore.
