Kaplan LSAT/LSAT Suggestions?

Post by Laurren » Sun May 18, 2014 5:03 pm

Hello, I will graduate with my bachelors (Business/Management Accounting) in December 2015 and I am preparing to spend from May/June 2014 until June 2015 studying for the LSAT. Truth be told, I am a complete newbie and I'm trying to figure out a good route to go. I decided that I need to get back into reading to enhance my comprehension skills for the LSAT (I want to read one book a week over the summer) and while I'm at it, I should look into getting an official book to dig into. I'm looking at going with a Kaplan book. When I took my ACT in high school, Kaplan really helped me get the comprehension down and I was able to score in the top percentile (not sure the exact) with reading and English. One of my questions is: Is there a huge difference in a 2013, 2014, or 2015 Kaplan Premiere LSAT book? I was about to order the 2014 but then I saw that the 2015 (the year I take the exam) book will be released next month. Would it be a waste of money to buy the 2014 or is there a lot of content I would miss out on by purchasing 2014, as opposed to 2015? I am literally starting from the bottom with studying for the LSAT. Is my plan for the summer alright or do I need to do something different? Also, I am a Georgia resident and I am looking at schools such at UGA (first choice), Mercer, and Emory, so I somewhat know what number I need to aim for and somewhat how I need to study for the LSAT.
I was going to purchase one of the LSAT Bibles but I really wanted to start off with a Kaplan book in order to identify my strengths and weaknesses. Anyways, please feel free to correct me on anything that I have said and offer your suggestions. I've tried to look at different people's suggestions via Google search, but there's just so many and I am a completely overwhelmed newbie to the LSAT, so I have no idea where to start!

Thanks.

If you're looking to buy an overall book, I would recommend the LSAT Trainer. It goes far more in-depth than the Kaplan books and, in my opinion, is far far better. (General consensus on this board would say the same) The manhattan books are also great, as are the powerscore bibles (specifically for LG).

I was an LSAT instructor for a year, and anything I heard from students who had any contact with Kaplan LSAT at all (whether it be a live course or the books) just confirmed everything I heard about Kaplan on TLS: don't waste your time or money. I personally used the PowerScore bibles and official PTs to get my score, and I know many others who have used them, as well as Manhattan or Blueprint books, to great effect. I'm sure there's other good stuff out there too, but I honestly would just steer clear of Kaplan.

Take a timed diagnostic test. You might score a 125 or a 175, and those scores mean very different things, but at least you know what you need to work on going forward. Generally games is the hardest section at first but it is also the most learnable and formulaic section.

Stay away from Kaplan go with PowerScore Bibles and maybe check out the LSAT Blog to find schedules and other resources.

I've seen ACT books recommended for RC... has anyone tried this?
