Kaplan vs. Manhattan LSAT Forum

Hi all,

I am an engineering student on co-op with the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, OH in the Fall of 2013 and I am prepping for the June 2014 LSAT. This summer semester I have been using Kaplan's LSAT Premier 2014 book and I am satisfied with it. In the fall I would like to take an online class, but I was wondering if anyone knew if I should take the class with Kaplan to further my ability to use their strategies, or if I should take Manhattan LSAT's online class? Any ideas as to which one is better? Please let me know what you guys think. Thank you!

I don't think there is anyone on this forum with a high percentile score that can vouch for Kaplan's prep books or courses. The actual LSAC materials which they publish (Preptests and actual questions ordered by type) see some use, but their methods are not well received here.

Manhattan, on the other hand, is really the gold standard right now. Most (vocal) posters just self study using the Manhattan 3rd edition bundle rather than take a course, but that depends on how you think you'll learn best.

Honestly if I could do it all over again I would buy the whole Velocity package and be done with it.

Blasphemous! How are the university administrated PT's provided by Kaplan? And I highly recommend the Kaplan Master's questions sorted, though I think you can only get it if you take their course, so good luck!

Most companies nowadays sort the questions bro.

Cambridge sells bundles, and those are definitely the best.

i did most of my self-study as just going over preptests... i was too young and dumb to know any different and, more importantly, hadn't really found the guides on this site in time. but, even though i'm done with the test, i do have questions regarding LSAT prep courses.

what do you all think of zenof180?
what about advisein solutions?

i toyed with the thought of advisein and a few other courses but by the time i got to that stage i didn't have enough time.

Use Manhattan to prep. You'll be happy you did. Whether or not you need the online course is a different question. That depends on you as a person. I took an in person course with them and jumped 21 points from my diagnostic. Safe to say it was worth the investment.

Not sure where all this Kaplan bashing comes from -- as a teacher I definitely support their message that it's probably smarter to not use a calculator when you are taking the LSAT --

Cambridge Lsat questions sorted by type are a godsend and worth the (unfortunately quite steep) cost.

Agree that Manhattan books are far and away the best.

What you need to seriously study for the LSAT is:

Manhattan LR and LG
40 most recently released preptests
Cambridge LR and LG sorted by type

Manhattan RC, like all RC guides is pretty short/weak but still has some useful information. I read a copy in Barnes and Noble, it just wasn't worth paying for.

I personally Use PS, along with their "combridge-like" packets. (same thing, just not sorted by difficulty)

It depends how much you study from the books.

They aren't comparable at all. MLSAT is miles above PS. I remember reading the PS bible and thinking it was so barebones... because that's what it was.

depends on what you're looking for. If you're PTing in the 140s, you will not understand MLSAT. My rule of thumb is that if you're trying to break into the 160s, powerscore is the best, for the 170s, manhattan (Velocity was fledgling when I was studying and LSAT trainer wasn't here yet)
