Is Kaplan that bad?

Post by Irundistance » Sun Jun 09, 2013 5:41 pm

Is Kaplan really that terrible? Some people I know swear by it, others tell me to not take their prep course. What makes it so bad?

too basic

relatively poor explanations

Teachers only need a 90th percentile score to be qualified

I did Kaplan's "LSAT Advantage – On Site" program last February. I started out with a 152 diagnostic, and the course alone bumped me up to a 160 average on my PT's. But when I didn't score as well as I wanted during the June administration, I bought the PowerScore Bibles - got through them and realized that they explained things WAY clearer than Kaplan, and the books were so much cheaper than the Kaplan course. The Bibles bumped me up to a 168 PT average. If I could have gone back and done things differently, I would have skipped the Kaplan course and just bought the Bibles - and treated myself to a cruise vacation with the extra money.

Would not do Kaplan again if I had it to do over. One strong positive are the materials they give you...all the actual old questions and complete tests WITH an experimental section built in. I'm not sure if other programs offer something similar, but I thought that was the one good part. Other than that, do something else.

The fact your teacher could have scored a 163 is what seals Kaplan courses as a joke

Depending on which local Kaplan office the course is run from the instructor may not have even been required to get 163+ on a real administration, just on a timed test taken at the office or at home on the 'honor' system.

This. And don't take Princeton Review either. I was a SAT tutor there. To teach, you have to score a 1800. This one girl couldn't do it, but they let her take it home to redo it. At. Home. Wtf...

What makes taking a Kaplan course attractive to many people is the idea of spending $1,200 on LSAT preparation. Some people feel better about themselves knowing they just wasted $1,200. It's almost as if paying this price has made them even more committed to law school.

The logic is that by somehow spending a lot of money you are somehow more inclined to score above average.

This makes me think of Good Will Hunting.

“See, the sad thing about a guy like you is in 50 years you're gonna staht doin some thinkin on your own and you're gonna come up with the fact that there are two certaintees in life. One, don't do that. And Two, you dropped a hundred and fifty grand on a fuckin education you coulda got for a dollah fifty in late chahges at the public library.”

Communicate now with those who not only know what a legal education is, but can offer you worthy advice and commentary as you complete the three most educational, yet challenging years of your law related post graduate life.

as a former kaplan instructor i can say that their style is very rigid and honestly not the best for a large majority of people and you had to follow their curriculum very strictly.

Also when i studied for my LSAT i never took a course, i think the courses work well as a supplement rather than your only form of study.
