FWIW, my score increases in PTs were pretty much overnight (after some work).
I took Dec 2011 and got a 166 after PTing around that.
I decided to retake in Oct 2012 and didn't really start studying until August because of work. For the first 4-5 weeks, I was still PTing around 167-168 and was really pissed that I wasn't doing any better. I basically went through all the PTs I had taken and made a list of all the question types I was getting wrong. After I realized there were only 3-4 types I consistently got wrong, I spent maybe an hour learning how to do those. Next PT, I got a 174 and never went lower than 170 after that (including test day when I got a 171).
Not a drastic increase, but those 5 points made a huge difference. AND that jump was made in the last couple weeks before the test, so there's definitely still hope if you're taking in December!
