Mine was actually black and white last year and it was fine.

Now, there is a big variation in clarity of black and white photos. "•The photograph must be clear enough so there is no doubt about your identity." If its "too dark" it wont work.

To be safe (your proctor might be a douche), you should just hit up walgreens or something instead of printing it on whatever black and white printer your going to use.
