I am confused between C & E, and do not see why E is the answer whereas C isn't.

The stimulus shows an example where it is inferred that because A was not found in a subsection of B, A must not be in any part of B. Obviously when you break it into those terms, (E) makes sense. (C) does not make sense because "student essays" is not a subsection of students. If (C) said that "it has been found that this classroom of students is apathetic toward current events, therefore all students are apathetic to current events" then the questionable reasoning would be paralleled.
