Test Etiquette: Tipping the Proctor?

Post by heebie-jeebies » Wed Sep 19, 2012 4:18 pm

Is it customary to tip the proctor(s) after the test if you are satisfied with their performance? If so, how much should I plan to tip? I tried to search the LSAC website, but couldn't find any info there.

4% of your expected earnings in your first year out of law school. Proctors can make or break your test day performance, which in turn determines the course of the rest of your life. If you can't afford it, take out a private loan. It'll be a drop in the bucket compared to your debt load when you graduate.

No. Don't give the proctor any money. Don't attempt to give the proctor any money. Don't tip the proctor.

20% of what you are expecting to pay for the LSAT, CAS, LSAC, and applications in total was what I was told....but I could have been misinformed....

15% of the registration fee, more depending on what she looks like.

I suggest tipping the proctor BEFORE the exam begins.

Be sure to tip in $1 bills. And hand them over one at a time.

Contrary to all the bad advice and nonsense here... it is customary to tip the proctor $1 for every minute they "forget" to call time after the 35th minute mark.

This is why I plan on wearing skinny jeans and a deep V to the test. I will also trim my chest hair on the evening of 5 Oct. and lean provocatively over the proctor as I hand her (I hope I get a good draw and it's a woman) my license and test ticket. I will include a small slip of paper with my # and instructions to call me after the test. I'd rather leave it up to her if she wants the gratuity instead of just imposing my will tbqh.

Having Louis Litt ask this question makes it somehow better.

OP: Ignore all the haters on here who did not take your question seriously; they clearly have not been out in the world and have no panache.

Have you considered event tickets? I know you have no idea what kind of person the proctor at your location is going to be, but if you can swing it, tickets would add a personal touch while at the same time showing a person that you really know how to live. I've found that this type of thing often goes over much better than just handing out a wad of cash, which frankly has no style. To deal with the uncertainty regarding the proctor's likes/dislikes, you can walk in with two or three pairs of tickets to different events in the pockets of your blazer. If the proctor looks like he or she would enjoy a sporting event, you give those tickets; if they appear to be more cultured, you give the ballet (or equivalent type of performance) tickets.

Need I mention that if you hit it off with the proctor, there is always the possibility that you can attend the event together?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
