Prevalence of specific LR types per section

Post by CR2012 » Tue Jul 31, 2012 7:29 am

Is there any resource available that has broken down the prevalence of certain types of LR questions types per section?

For instance, is it common knowledge, or is there any sort of statistics that show that X% of LR questions per section will be Necessary Assumption, and X% will be Identify the Flaw etc?

I obviously intend on studying each and every question type exhaustively, but I thought knowledge of such a practice could be beneficial.

Thanks everyone,

CR

Just about half (maybe even a little more) will have to deal with three question types.

-What can be logically inferred or must be true questions.
-Weaken questions
-Strengthen questions.

These are based on questions dating back to 1991.

I've consistently seen at least 2 parallel reasoning

Thanks for these observations.

As I start PTing (it's already August...) I will be sure to keep data on each question type that appears in each LR section as I go through my review. Maybe a consistent ratio can be discerned?

We've got this data in our books; I'll collate it and post it later today, so don't bother collecting the data yourself.

Oh, Great!

That will save me some time. I had a feeling this sort of information was out there somewhere.

Thanks.

All numbers are average/exam (NOT section)since 2000. If I know of a trend, I'll be sure to state it.

IMPLICATION FAMILY
Must Be True - 2.43, trending down, in favor of...
Soft Must Be True ("most strongly supported", "best illustrated") - 5.4, trending up
Must Be False - .70

CHARACTERIZATION FAMILY
Main Point - 2.17
Describe - 1.77
Flaw - 8.00 (and even this underestimates their importance, as the Operation family almost always requires the ability to first spot the flaw in the argument)
Parallel - 1.90
Parallel Flaw - 1.97 (yes, these should definitely be viewed as two distinct question types, as strategies and characteristics of correct answer choices differ)
Role - 1.90
Disagree - 1.53, trending down
Agree - .13, nearly extinct

OPERATION FAMILY
Strengthen - 6.07
Weaken - 4.83
Crux - .20, also nearly extinct
Sufficient - 2.80
Necessary - 5.20
Resolve -1.80
Explain - 1.73 (yes, there is a difference between Resolve and Explain questions; no, it's not important enough to worry about)
