What are the best LSAT study books?

Post by Systematic1 » Mon Mar 12, 2012 7:03 pm

I'm new to the boards, so a quick hello is in order. Hello.

With that out of the way, I'm really interested to know what books people recommend, and perhaps more importantly, what books people who have taken the LSAT would advise me to stay away from. I've been reading Princeton Review - Cracking The LSAT 2011 Edition (though a seasoned 179 recently insisted to me that this book is really crap in comparison to some of the other materials out there.) I've heard good things about the Powerscore Bibles, but again, I really want some input from people who have already taken the LSAT. I'm planning on taking the October test, so I have a little time to read some different materials. Let me know what you think. Looking forward to joining the conversation on TLS! :D :D :D

If Princeton Review is doing things the same way, they are not using real LSAT questions but rather their own questions, developed in-house. I think real LSAT questions are optimal.

The PowerScore Logic Games Bible is really good--it gives you an excellent general template that lets you attack 90% of the games you might end up seeing. I also ended up taking a TestMasters course, and their LG prep was similar, with different tweaks--I was able to figure out what I liked most about both methods and eventually develop something that worked for me.

I took a test masters course. Best choice I could have ever made. I DO NOT suggest Kaplan.

With that said, if a course is too expensive for you, I'd recommend erring all of the PowerScore Bibles and as many past LSAT practice tests with answers that you can....and time yourself.

Okay so first off, thanks a lot for the responses!

I do, however, have a couple of quick questions and thoughts.

1. Is the LG Bible really this expensive? I see it on Amazon new for $588....
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/097212 ... e=&seller=

2. I did find a new LG Bible on Powerscore's page, but it's a 2008 version. Do they offer a more recent version?
http://www.powerscore.com/lsat/content_ ... GDF1xA#faq

3. If anyone could post direct links to the books they recommend I would really appreciate it.

Thanks Guys! :D :D :D :D

Buy all of the official lsat preptests and work through them. The last time I checked there were some good deals on ebay and amazon.

I think the general consensus among people who've studied for the lsat within the last year or so is to read the Powerscore Logical Reasoning Bible and Logic Games Bible first, then move on to the Manhattan LR, LG, and RC books. Ignore the Powerscore Reading Comprehension book altogether, but it is probably best to read the Powerscore Logical Reasoning book before the Manhattan one since the Manhattan book kind of jumps in assuming you know the basics of logic (which Powerscore walks you through). The best test takers I know of seem to mix variations of Powerscore LG and Manhattan LG based on what type of game it is.

-That first one is a rip-off. you can find the book used on Amazon for around $30

- I don't think they have a more recent version (it won't have a negative impact on your prep, relax)

From what I remember none of the books from Powerscore or Manhattan are over $65 or so. I even just found a LG Bible book new for $35 on Amazon by doing a quick google search, it's the first item when you search: logic games bible.

Honestly. I have the Powerscore Bibles but i find them to be sooo dense... I really cant read them without wanting to fall asleep :(

I think Manhattan is more reader-friendly... Maybe I am just bias... I found Manhattan to be way easier to read, but i've heard people swear by Powerscore, so if you can do both, do it.

Also. Manhattan is like.. $30 on Amazon.

Oh, and this part of their website, ROCKS:

Not all of the questions are there... but the most commonly missed, are.

You guys are awesome, I'm quickly falling in love with TLS.
And I'm sorry to keep babbling on, but someday I'll pay it forward, I promise.

So my next question is, should I get the PowerScore workbooks that go along with the bibles? What are these? Important/not important?

LG Bible Workbook

LR Bible Workbook

Max324 wrote:LGB/LRB are pretty thorough; I got a lot out of them without the workbooks. Check out Cambridge LSAT's "Logic Games by Type" and "Logical Reasoning by Type". As you work through the LGB/LRB chapters, you can reinforce the concepts by drilling the corresponding sections in the Cambridge books.
this is credited. you don't have to get the powerscore workbooks. i believe that teh cambridge books use questions from the tests up until #40's which is great because it allows you to drill the older questions and take the more recent tests in their full length format
