Can't fathom any reason to join mensa other than ... wait, no. There's no reason.

Probably should take the topic of Affirmative Action to the lounge, there's a discussion on the SCOTUS case in Oct.

Re: February 2012 Waiting Thread
Haha I was thinking of doing at as well. Literally for no reason other than because it would be a funny thing to bring up. Like I might pay the forty bucks or whatever it costs to join just in case someone says "well he's no mensa member" to me. Plus 95th percentile ain't even that hard on the LSAT so I'm just about certain I'll be able to.FinallyGoing wrote: I am not suggesting that being a member of Mensa is the same as being a Marshall Scholar for example; however in the context in which we are discussing it, I think you could consider them relatively the same insofar as it's only going to resonate with the people who are familiar with it and that is going to already be a limited amount of people.
G-d willing, I'll be using my LSAT score for Mensa eligibility purposes. I see no down side and it could certainly make for an interest conversation piece and certainly wouldn't harm a resume.

ymmv= literally "your mileage may vary", used as "your results may vary"kerflux wrote:No one is going to tell me what ymmv or ftfy means
ftfy= "fixed that for you"
EDIT: oops, this was already answered. tl;dr
looks like I missed a lot today. can't say I'm sorry based on the past couple of pages. I think we need to progress into picwhoring instead.

I think there's somewhat of a reputation in higher society of Mensa as a group of self-congratulatory autistic men, whose overall level of intelligence isn't particularly impressive (1 out of 50?) Don't be so quick to show off your relative smarts.FinallyGoing wrote:Hopefully.bernaldiaz wrote:You're probably going to get banned for posting these.RodionRaskolnikov wrote:--ImageRemoved--

Re: February 2012 Waiting Thread
everyone in law school is also qualified so it will likely will serve zero purpose on a resume. I also can't imagine any point in time where it will come up in conversation if one is a member in mensa (and if it does, saying one is qualified should serve the same purpose as saying one is a member).Fyo'Couch wrote:For my fellow Canadians....

Its funny though because there is 0 chance that im in the 95+ percentile of people in terms of IQ.

Yeah I would never ever put it on a resume.MConchis wrote:I think there's somewhat of a reputation in higher society of Mensa as a group of self-congratulatory autistic men, whose overall level of intelligence isn't particularly impressive (1 out of 50?) Well we will have to agree to disagree then. I've known many MBB consulting types who have used it tactfully on their resumes; on balance I guess I just don't see the potential harm.

Re: February 2012 Waiting Thread
What? Why? I was already banned for talking too specifically about an LSAT question while others who spoke of questions more specifically than I did - they wrote the asnwers and everything- didn't get banned. If I get banned for this, then this site is stupid.bernaldiaz wrote:You're probably going to get banned for posting these.RodionRaskolnikov wrote:--ImageRemoved--

Re: February 2012 Waiting Thread
So in my analysis, there is one main cost and one main benefit. The benefit is that you prove you are smart. But how smart are you actually proving that you are? Only top 2%. If you were applying to MBB, let's assume you were already at a top university and had a top GPA. So you really aren't gaining anything by showing that you are in Mensa. The cost is that you look like an asshole. So basically, I see minimal benefit with a pretty big cost.FinallyGoing wrote:Well we will have to agree to disagree then. Obviously, if you think you don't look pretentious for putting that on your resume then there is no harm.

I think you may be mistaken about certain people not getting banned. A ton of people got 24 hr bans.

Re: February 2012 Waiting Thread
Main reason is that affirmative action is sort of out of bounds on this site because it ends up getting ugly when people talk about it. Honestly, I thought that was stupid until I saw how quickly it becomes a shit storm when it is discussed. Also, it was just really off-topic so combined with the first reason it just looks like you are trying to incite an AA debate. What? Why? I was already banned for talking too specifically about an LSAT question while others who spoke of questions more specifically than I did - they wrote the asnwers and everything- didn't get banned. Yeah I got a 24 hour ban too. Don't take it personally. We more than deserved those bans (if the rules actually make sense, which is an entirely different debate. Since TLS isn't responsible for any copywritten material that is posted on it, you may ask why they even care what we discuss, but I digress)anteater1 wrote:I think you may be mistaken about certain people not getting banned. Not sure where the warrant for the assumption that everyone is going to look at it on a resume in an "asshole" light comes from but uh O.K. The people I know are all from H/Y/P.bernaldiaz wrote:So in my analysis, there is one main cost and one main benefit. The benefit is that you prove you are smart.
