The self-deprecating nature of law school applicants

Post by Ohiobumpkin » Sat Oct 22, 2011 11:35 pm

I'm new to these forums, and I apologize if this is in the wrong section or something. I have noticed over the last few weeks of reading online postings by former or current perspective law school applicants a trend of sorts. I read people talking about their LSAT PT scores, their GPA, or ECs, and basically describing their achievements in self-deprecating ways. For example, somebody might say "I have been making 1-2 errors on the LR sections on my PTs. I know this isn't good, but can I get my score up to 0 errors on LR?" Or another example will be "This sucks! I only have a 3.65 gpa!" I seem to read these kind of statements reasonably often, and I started wondering why law school applicants seem to be so damn self-deprecating? One theory I have is that people tend to compare themselves to the best, and conclude if they aren't part of that upper echelon of the elite, then they must be bad. For example, if I don't have the scores to get into YHSC, then I must suck. What does everyone else think about this?

This site is called top-law-schools.com. Not any-shitty-law-school-that-will-take-me.com

Also, being self-deprecating is a good way to try and not sound like a dick.

Step 1: Ask self what does the 'T' in TLS stands for?

Humblebrags make you sound just as dickish, and are often even more annoying.

Well, the attempts to not sound like a dick aren't always successful.

Yes, obviously this site is called top-law-schools. However, this site is not devoted solely to the T5, T10, or T25. This site is devoted to information regarding law schools in general (granted, with some emphasis on tier-1) from what I can gather. If the makers of this website wanted to focus only on applicants to YHSC, then it should be yhsc.com .

Just noticed it. Nice Columbia trolling.

Seriously though, as far as the GPA is concerned, many of the top schools have GPA floors, which is why many people complain about weaker GPAs. And the people who bitch about 1-2 questions wrong per section can DIF.

It's what TLS has evolved into. A site with many high-achievers who hide behind the anonymity of the interwebs to chastise those who do not have similar credentials. Not much you can do other than sift through the bullshit for the few helpful nuggets that TLS spews out.

Should I have written yhscc.com then, lol? I'm still new here and don't know all the ways in which to piss people off, lol.
