Is the Big Orange/Kaplan Mastery book needed if...

I'm enrolling in a Testmasters course? The book is quite expensive and it's just a bunch of questions and questions and explanations right?

I've been told that the TM homework is pretty much drilling questions, though I've heard that they just give answers and not explanations? Anyone know?
