LR butt kicking, Re-test advice?

Post by MarineLaw » Tue Jun 28, 2011 3:55 pm

Hello!

I scored a 158 on my June 2011 LSAT. This was a 4 point drop from my 162 PT average (I took 18 practice tests, my range was from 153-170).

I was -1 RC, -18 LR, -11 LG. I got smoked on the last two logic games.

This was a serious deviation in my LR, which up to this point was my only reliable section (avg -5 to -10). My RC has always been good and LG have always been my bane. For LR practice, when I missed one, I would write a short few on why the right answer was right and kept a journal. Was I off the mark on this strategy?

Is a 4 point drop normal? My last 6 practice tests saw a huge average drop (average of 165 to an average of 160), I know they were more recent tests, but could this be a case of burnout (I prepped since Feb 1st and about a month last year before I deployed). Is LR typically the most fickle of the sections, and what would be a good strategy to utilize for a potential retake (clearly mine didn't work)?

I actually had the complete opposite problem on the June test. LR -3, LG -2, RC -6. I think the biggest thing for you would be to read the Powerscore LR Bible thoroughly and practice using those strategies during PTs. During your PTs was there a specific type of LR question that you got wrong? Did you review PTs thoroughly?

Another suggestion is to go through the Powerscore LG Bible and make sure you consistently have a perfect LG section before the October test. Believe me, it's seems impossible, but it will help your score tremendously. Before prepping, I couldn't even finish 3 games, and ended up getting half wrong, but on test day, I only got 2 wrong. Since you have plenty of time, try to do every type of LG and all the LG out there.

A bit of a drop is normal during the actual test due to anxiety. If you are scoring that poorly on LG it is probably that you haven't been taught terribly well. How did you study and how much have you improved since you've been studying?

In regards to LG my biggest issue is timing. I got to the 2nd to last game, got hung up on all the "plugging and chugging" and moved onto the balls game, at which point I panicked and wasted my last 10 minutes. I guessed on the last 8 questions.

On the experimental LG, I finished all but 3 questions.

When I started prepping, I was at a complete loss on the games. I finished prepping being able to consistently finish three games and get into the fourth (but usually not finish). If I have time, I can get 100%, I'm just not fast enough.

Suggestions?

I'm not sure what the deal is with LR. I still haven't reviewed the test. I can't take the October test (overseas), but I'm not starting LS until 2013 so I'll probably retake next June. Thanks for the suggestions!

Yeah, nobodys issue is timing on the LG. Your issue is you don't know it well enough. If you are just plugging stuff in for each question you generally won't be able to get through all 4 games, you need to learn to approach them deductively. Try figuring out the answer before looking at the answer choice (of course only when you can. For a "could be true" oftentimes you won't be able to do this").
