Question about negating with conditional reasoning

How do you know when to negate a symbol with conditional reasoning? I am doing the Principle chapter from the LRB and the first question is about wholly truthful statements and lies. If I were to diagram it I would have negated the D for deception, but I don't believe the bible has done this and get confused when you should and should not negate something.
