165+/Retake Study Partner?

Post by hulahoop » Fri Jul 16, 2010 5:55 pm

Just wondering if anyone out there was in the same boat: trying to get above 170, who would be interested in following a study schedule and going over the questions online together. I originally took the LSAT in June 2008, scored a 169. My upper range of practice before that test was around 175, which is where I am aiming this time around. Just starting to take full sections again after going through both bibles (most of which I honestly didn't remember). Games killed me the last time, so I have been trying to really zero in on those while hoping I haven't lost my knack for RC and LR. Anyway, just wondering if anyone on here was in a similar position who would like to team up. I did all self-study the first time around, going over each preptest in a forum that was all following the same schedule, and it helped me out immensely. Where I am in my scoring now as well as the fact that I am retaking puts me in a bit of a rare position compared to many people, so I thought I would put this out there in case someone else was feeling the same way.

Anyone interested is welcome (Especially retakers- lack of original material sucks)! I was going to set up a schedule for preptests and then we could share difficulties/questions/tips via PM after each one/section as time permits.

Eh?

Hey. Count me in. I scored a 165 on the Dec. test. I scored between 165-172 on PT's prior to taking it. I am having difficulty getting back into the rhythm of studying. I have started the Bibles all over again as well. I am averaging about -2 to -6 on LG's so I am no guru there. In addition to this, I need work on parallel reasoning and the formal logic LR questions. I am near perfect on RC, which is nice. But, I still should get back into the habit of taking those sections. PM me with more details. I am thinking about doing doing literally every game from 9 onward. How's that sound?

Good luck.

I went 166 to a 173, and might be retaking a third time (haven't fully decided not to yet).

Wow. That is a great improvement. Not sure if I would take it again with a 173. But if you think you can do better then why not? Congratulations.

I was PT'ing at 178 avg prior to the 173 with my lowest at 172 so I feel I underperformed on test day (nerves got to me, which is unusual).

I feel like there are advantages to retaking (I'm a supersplitter so I would be remiss if I missed out on T14 because I didn't retake) though I might not, considering it will delay my apps by about a month.

sounds like a great idea, i'm in. scored a dismal 163 in june after pt avg was in the low-mid 170's. didn't use (or know about) any such thing as the LRB, LGB, superprep etc...that was going on something like mcgraw-hill practice book and about 8 pt's out of the first 10 actual, which are mostly irrelevant for testing mostly used for practice. PM me to let me know what you plan on using so i can get it.

Wow. 9 onward, there is no way I have the time/patience to do that. I work full time and live with 2 men with ridic schedules. Plus, I am not sure it is all completely relevant. I believe that after a certain amount of tests it is about the concepts, not the amount of practice. At least that is how I feel right now, based on my study the last time around. I was planning to do the 3 in Superprep and pretty much from 29 forward, roughly following the 3 month guide from Lsatblog. http://lsatblog.blogspot.com/2009/06/3- ... edule.html Actually, I have been using up 29-39 to drill certain questions types/sections at the moment. I am right around the beginning of month 2 I guess, just finished the bibles, gonna schedule the tests between now and Oct. How does that sound to you guys? Input?

Anyway, its almost 2 am on Fri night, if that sounds good I will PM you more details in the morning, hopefully sans hangover. 8)

Yes. That sounds good. I have already started on 9 onward, and you may be right, some of the LG's are actually absurd and not relevant. So what are you thinking, one test once a week? Like a Sat test day? And then review Sunday? I will order the Superprep book this week. Have both of you guys done pretty much all of the most recent PT's? Because I have. But, I have not seen the Sept 2009, June 2010, or any of the Superprep tests. I would like to save these for a later date while we hone our basic skills, if no one is opposed.

Also, if I could recommend the Kaplan Mastery Book (if you don't have it already), I've only scratched the surface with this book, but it seems like it will be helpful.

And by the way, I am really liking this idea. I think it will be a good motivator for all parties.

OK, so I survived the weekend (barely). Ordered the Superprep, I am fine with saving those until the end. Right now I am going through 29-39 section by section just to practice (I have already pretty much destroyed most of those LG sections) if anyone wants to follow along/ask questions on those. Either this coming weekend or the next I plan on taking my first full length test. I will probably start with 39 or 40, if that works for you guys.

How do you want to do this? stay in this thread? Through PM? If more than one of you is interested posting things in a thread is probably the best way to go unless you want to copy everyone on everything. This only really works if we can check in everyday (at least every weekday), what are your schedules like?

Anyway, hope everyone had an awesome weekend. Trying to finish 29 and start 30 today, anyone done those recently? I already have one question thats driving me nuts

I think I'm good with posting here. Although, I think there may be an issue with writing specifics relating to LSAT questions, although I may be mistaken. In which case, we can just switch to PM for specifics. Basically, I work 8-6 Mon-Fri w/ the occasional late night here and there. After work I hit the library for two hours. So I could get cracking on PT 29 tommorow and post around 8 or so. What is your daily study schedule like? And how do you want to structure this study schedule?

Also, have you heard from lastch2? Is he/her still in this?

Hey, I would love to get on your schedule next week. I will be finishing up an internship this Friday; after it's done I'll be able to meet any study schedule. So please consider me in as well. PT 39 or 40 works well for me; I am actually fine with any given order, so long as we save the most recent ones for the tail end of our prep.

I haven't heard anything else from lastch2, buckilaw you were the one who pmed me right?

As of now, it looks like just the 4 of us. I work 9-6, with random weekend days. Gonna try to do a full length preptest this saturday (before work-ugh- so might not happen), would #44 work for everyone? Working my way through the earlier ones one section at a time right now, just got Kaplan mastery, might use that to drill LR. LG is still my major weakness though, sigh.

Ok guys, so just to put it all out there, can we get some background/where everyone is coming from?

ME:
Undergrad: Berkeley 09, polisci major (been working/figuring shit out for the last year)
LSAC GPA: 1.9
June 2008: was practicing 169-175 range, scored 169. Aiming 172+ this time.
weakness: LG (got like -6, total brainfart that just killed the rest of my test)

was the 1.9 a mistake? j/w...
ME:
Undergrad: a private college you guys have never heard of...trust me. Poli sci as well
G.P.A.: 3.9
June 10: 165...tought the procter was going to give me a misconduct freaked out and then bombed that section and got -9...needless to say it killed my score.
weakness: ranges from LR to RC...depending on the test...I know. sucks.

I am down to do 44 this saturday and then we can report back. I am also studying with mastery....which parts of mastery helped you? do you have endurance and the other books too? j/w.

Me:

Dec 2009: 165
UG: Cornell 2007, Political Science/ Gov. (3.5)
Weakness: Logic Games (-4- -6) and LR ( -6- -10)

Like I mentioned earlier I have just started using the Mastery Practice Book in conjunction w/ the LR Bible. I will report more results when I get them. But, it seems like a solid strategy.
44 on Sat? And everyone just continues independent study/ timed sections, does that work for everyone?

Sounds good. yes I didn't fail college, although apparently I can't type while watching Family Guy. 3.9
Glad you guys are in, this should help immensely. If only so we are all accountable to stick to a schedule.

I'm glad you clarified that. The TBS marathon can do that to you. Anyway, Hulahoop you want to set the schedule?

I scored a 170 in September 2009. Retaking because I ended up with a lower GPA than anticipated (had to uncover two pass/fails - long story). Anyway, I'll be taking the October exam, and I'm hoping for a 175+. I didn't study as much as I could have last year. I focused on LG. Ended up getting all of those right on the exam, but I did a practice test today and missed two. Guess I'm back at square one.

Public University, Poli Sci Major 3.76. Was scoring from 165 to 170 on my practice tests and I wound up with a 165 on the June test. I am aiming for a 170+.

I may not be able to do PT 44 this weekend, or any test this weekend; I have some things to take care of. Please do not change the schedule on my account, I can just skip this initial test or do it on Monday or Tuesday.

So I scored a 165 a couple weeks ago. Right now I am going through the LR Bible. Any chance I can get in on this group?

Ok. Will be doing PT 29 or at least one LR, LG, RC section tonight. I will post my results on the board around 8 or so. If anyone cares to join, please feel free to do so. So that we can discuss any issues

Here are my results:

LG: 22/24
RC: 23/27
LR: 21/ 25 :x
LR: Did not have time for the second LR

Assuming I am to get the same amount correct on the 4th LR (large assumption), I would be looking at a 167.

The RC was boring as usual and was not my best performance. I struggled w/ the fourth passage and the platypus passage.

LR was standard. I'd be up for a review if anyone else is down, but again, I think we can review most of this on our own.

LG: I did well on this section. However, the last game I had difficulty setting up, and frankly, I dont have any idea how I didn't botch the entire fourth game. I would appreciate any advice on how people set this game up. Suggestions and advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

Unfortunately I don't have that test yet. Planning a major LSAT prep order on Amazon tonight, including the Powerscore LR Bible. That is the section I have the most trouble with.

lmao I thought the platypus passage was awesome. like, most interesting lsat info ever. Guess thats what a real life boring data entry job will do to ya

That is all I have to add right now, sorry. Had a long day at work. Gonna try to work through all of PT30 this week if you wanna do it with me deadhipsters. I will post my results of 29 in a bit (must eat food).

Oh, did you get 1:13 (section 1, question 13) right? It was the only one I missed on that section, and it was b/c went back and changed my answer from the correct one to D. Now I seem to have screwed up my reasoning b/c I can't reconvince myself that A is a better answer. I almost always have time left for LR and RC, and apparently still use that time to go second guess myself and change correct answers to wrong ones. sigh.

Yes, I’m up to do PT 30. I think I am going to have to do it in pieces. I’ve got a lot on my plate this week. So, I will not be able to spend time obsessively studying, talking, and thinking about the LSAT (sigh).

I did get 13. I think it is the LEAST similar reasoning that may have thrown you. I think it was incorrect because the others all related specifically to the function of the organizations/ people. A, B, C, and D all stated the primary function of the org/ person in the first sentence. Then in the second sentence it stated how one thing would make that org/person ineffective or inefficient. E did not do this, it varied slightly.
But, obviously you knew that if you got it the first time.

Good job btw, I got killed w/ 4 wrong on that section.

Shifty: Get on that. I’m hoping you are some sort of LSAT genie who will be able to solve my LG problems.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
