Recommended Reading for RC?

Post by Precessional » Thu Jul 15, 2010 5:25 am

I'm a poor reader, and this became clearer after a shitty RC score on my cold diag. So on my journey to a respectable LSAT score, I hope to read regularly and, with discipline, implement active reading.

Recommended or favorite sites for regular reading? Scouring past threads, The Economist and Scientific American seem to be the two popular choices. But beyond this?

I've taken to slate.com and the NY Times site, and am looking to expand my reading pool.

The purpose of reading comprehension sections is to test your ability to keep track of the following: opinions, facts, structure of the passage.

These elements can be varied lots of ways, the author could be countering in a qualified manner, attacking only part of an argument (maybe just the premises) or it may present a complex set of facts that are extremely detail heavy. Further, a passage can go about making in argument in a wide variety of ways (you already know this to be the case). So what types of material also have similar elements?

Enter a law review article! These are essentially opinion pieces derived from highly detailed pieces of legislation, court decisions or other sources of law, so you know that they are fact heavy (and complex). The arguments, like most things, are a combination of how the author wishes to make their point and what is generally convincing. The point they are trying to make will often be heavily qualified, but that doesn’t mean all the articles will be, some are rather exploratory.
The difference here is that the terminology has a bit of a learning curve, they aren’t going to make a nice little clause telling you what constitutes some terminology or another. Still, these dense pieces of writing are excellent sources of study and are often widely available through university library systems.

This is both incredibly informative and incredibly heartbreaking at the same time.

Aha! Excellent suggestion! Will look into it.

I had to rumble through a few articles on a paper, and was happy to find tidy pdf versions of articles on JSTOR (as opposed to the eeky Lexus Nexus html files).

I actually downloaded a few opinions from this last SCOTUS term for leisure reading; but became overhwelmed by their sheer size. McDonald v. Chicago, for instance, was a good 214 pages. Especially as someone uninitiated to 2nd Amendment jurisprudence, I quickly lost my way.

Law Review Articles should be much more manageable!

Besides the heavily dense/complex articles and what not to read specifically in preparation for the types of passages you'll encounter in RC, if you're genuinely a poor reader, I would suggest reading daily something that interests you. Yes, you should also read difficult material to get accustomed to it and better at reading difficult familiar, but you'll be more likely to put more time into something you enjoy, so you should have a book on the go throughout the time leading up to your LSAT that you genuinely enjoy. It doesn't matter if it's Harry Potter or whatever. I think that'll help your overall reading confidence and skills.

I would recomend The New Yorker. There have been a few RC passages that were on literary theory and such that seemed like a breeze to me. I attribute that to being a long time reader of The New Yorker. It is also less boring than many other suggestions.

Yes, I agree with the that. And I hope OP knew that himself. As a side note, I really enjoy your avatar.
