PT 15, LR 1, Q15

Post by AllanC » Mon Jul 12, 2010 1:07 pm

I would like to know why the answer to this question is B and not C?

Answer B states that the benifits (no pain) of the new medication would outweigh the possible side effects. However, the stimulus gives no indication to what those side effects might be. What if the side effect was death? I very much doubt that the side effects would outweigh the benifits in that case. I undestand that the question asks us for "what is most supported" but since we have no indication of the side effects, I find it hard to believe this is the correct choice.

Answer C states that a patient treated with the new medication could sustain a joint injury without realizing it. Well...if someone is given a medication that inhibits the hormone that causes pain and swelling in joints (a hormone which is activated when injured mind you) it is at least possible that they MIGHT not be aware of an injury that they sustained while on the medication. It's similar to being on pain killers and playing rugby. A few of my teammates would get seriously injured but would have no idea at the time...

Thanks!
