PT 35, Sec 4, Question 14

Post by rjh456 » Thu May 13, 2010 12:12 am

Could someone please explain why the answer to this is B and not E. Clearly I've mixed up my conditionals in some crazy way, but the more I stare at this problem the more I feel convinced it's the non-credited response. Please help!

Evidence: Struggle Early -> Good Perspective = SE -> GP

Conclusion: Struggle Early -> NOT Success Granted = SE -> NOT SG

Sufficient Assumption: GP -> NOT SG (Choice B)

Choice E confuses necessary and sufficient conditions. It reverses them without negating.

I recently did a post going over the logic behind this that you might find helpful.

Glad to help!

Check out PT36, S3, Q12 (p273 in Next 10) and PT31, S2, Q10 (p91 in Next 10) for some similar ones.

If you can do those without any trouble, you've probably got the general concept down.

For some reason, I'm obsessed with how mechanical these babies can be.
