How did you improve your RC scores?

Post by honestabe84 » Wed Apr 21, 2010 2:15 pm

RC is one section that is holding my PT scores down A LOT. While I do read books on occasion in my free time, I have never been a HUGE reader. As a result, I think I'm not as good of a reader as I could be.

My question is directed towards those that were scoring low on RC (i.e. greater than -8) and managed to significantly improve. What methods did you adopt that seem to have helped?

Thanks.

i read a thread a few days ago that was GREAT. basically people said they sat down and did 10 rc sections in a row. (some people didn't do quite 40 rc passages in a row, but they did a lot.) it sounds very effective and i will be trying this soon. i will try to find the thread and post a link. let me know if this works for you.

I think there are approximately one bazillion threads about this already, but I suggest reading a lot of non-fiction. New York Times, The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, Newsweek, Scientific American, Popular Science, etc. Get yourself used to reading this type of material as this is what usually pops up on the test. Read articles from these types of sources for 35 minutes every day. When you're done, ask yourself some basic RC questions like "What was the main point of the passage?" Don't read for speed, just read. A lot. You'll get better at reading which will help you at RC.

10 RC passages in a row? That's like taking two full PTs (including experimental) back-to-back. I guess if you want to see improvement you have to work for it.

I read The Economist while doing cardio at the gym for 30 minutes, 3-4 days per week. Also, as a previous poster suggested, do multiple RC sections in a row. I noticed a gradual improvement in my ability to retain information and figure out the main ideas, etc., over time. There really isn't a strategy for improving RC; you'll get more comfortable over time, and your accuracy should improve.

Yeah, it seems as though (unlike LG and LR) all you can do is practice and hope for the best.

No, I didn't. I just remember hearing people talking about doing and RC marathon with 10 PTs.

Thanks for finding that thread for me.

well not exactly. i would assume that you check your answers after each passage.

Lol. Yeah, I have a bad habit of posting in threads without reading the thread.
