Prep 48. Dec 05. Sec 2. Question 13

Post by eternallearner » Mon Apr 12, 2010 8:05 pm

Logic Games:

Question 13: From the question stem, are we able to conclude that Xena fixes only one item?

This is the only question I got wrong and do not know why (C) is the right choice. I picked (D) since I was able to infer what X, Y, S, and Z can fix.

Thank you!

No, you cannot conclude or infer X fixes only one machine. He may fix one, two or three machines. but not limited to just one.

Rules:
Xena and three others repair radios
Yolanda repairs both T and V
Stacy does not repair any machine that Yolanda repairs.
Zane repairs more types of machines than Yolanda
Wim does not repair any type of machine that Stacy repairs
Urma repairs exactly two types of machines

Inferences from the rules:
Stacy repairs R and nothing else since she cannot repair T or V
Yolanda cannot repair radios
Zane must repair all three machins since Yolanda repairs two.
Wim does not repair radios since Stacy repairs radios
Since Wim cannot repair radios, the three who can repair radios other than Xena are Stacy, Urma, and Zane.

Based on this, we can only determine exactly 3 people's repairs: Stacy, Yolanda and Zane

Thank you for replying!

This is my central confusion:

"Yolanda repairs both TV and VCRs."
-- From this, we deduce that Yolanda cannot fix radios. In other words, Yolanda can only fix TV and VCRs.

"Xena repairs radios"
-- From this, we deduce that Xena might be able to fix radios, TV and/or VCRs. However, if we apply the logic from the first statement (Yolanda....) we should be able to deduce that Xena can only fix radios.

Where have I errored?

Thank you for helping me!

The issue is that you can't make that kind of deduction from either.

From that fact that Yolanda repairs TVs and VCRs, you only know that she does those two. Notthat she only does those two. From that, she could also do Radios.

Likewise, from "Xena repairs radios", we don't know that she doesn't do anything else.

The reason we know that Yolanda doesn't do Radios is because of clue #3, which states that Stacy doesn't do anything Yolanda does. Since each tech has to do at least 1 machine, we know that Stacy is stuck with Radios, as a result blocking Yolanda out.
