thorny seedpods --> curled leaves --> white flowers <--|--> fuzzy seeds --> long stems

It's shorthand for this:
fuzzy seeds --> [strike]white flowers[/strike]
white flowers --> [strike]fuzzy seeds[/strike]

In other words, a specimen of plant X cannot have both qualities.
