Average first LSAT practice test?

Post by Solerpower » Sat Jan 16, 2010 3:59 am

Ok people, so i took my first practice test yesterday, I scored a 156. Needless to say I was quite disappointed. I have a high GPA and i'm a URM so i'm looking to get into some higher end T14 schools.

My question is this: Is my score an average first LSAT practice test score, higher or lower?

With 5 months of consistent hard studying, around what score should I expect?

Many people go to the 170s from a score like that.

156 is a pretty solid score going in cold. 170+ is definitely attainable.

well i think the average score on the real thing is 152 or so, so ur already substantially above average.

How coincidental, your user name must appear angelic to those TLS'ers you comfort, itsfine.

fantastic score. actually a mark breakdown would be really helpful.

rc i think is the hardest to improve on, but LR is very improvable, and LG is practically masterable.

This.

I think the average score improvement thru study is 10 points. Work hard and you will be in very good shape.

You'll be fine if you put in the study time. I did 146-->167.

Does your score - or the legitimacy of your score - differ from company to company? For example, I just finished Test 1 in McGraw-Hill (I know I know, needless to say I found TLS after buying the book) and scored 167. I don't know if I would score the same on a real practice LSAT. But given the criticisms of the McG-H book - I'm using the 2010 Curvebreakers edition with 8 tests - I don't know whether to feel good about that or what.

The breakdown was:

LR - 17/25
LG - 22/25
LR - 19/25
RC - 24/27

So I obviously know where I need to improve. At least, I think I do.

Actually, I'd like to get TLS's take on a part of one of the questions, because it really feels logically wrong. The question is a deductive reasoning question about why some dude has fleas. It says:
  • "If a person does not live with fleas, then he or she does not have a cat."
And in the answers/explanations it concludes that:
  • "[strike]People live with fleas -> Cat[/strike]; Cat -> People Live with Fleas."
But just because people if people do not live with fleas do not have cats, that doesn't mean that people who have cats have fleas, right?

I wanted to boil it down to the crux of the problem but if someone wants to see the full question I can type it up.
