How important are prep tests at the start of your prep?

Post by Jenness » Sun Jan 03, 2010 10:43 pm

I'm about to begin preparing for the June test and have just ordered the bibles, however I've heard from the experience of others that prep tests ordered from LSAC might take as long as 4 weeks to arrive. As I'm just starting out, I'm wondering if this will be an issue. Will this wait delay my progress? If so, I'll purchase the tests from Amazon at a higher price.

If you don't mind printing them out, cambridgelsat.com sells all of the preptests, including some that aren't available on lsac or amazon, at I think a slightly lower price, and I believe you have access to them (are able to print them out of your computer) as soon as you pay.

Although if you're taking the June test you should be fine. I live on the other side of the world and LSAC took I think about 3 weeks to send me my tests.

I bought all my PTs from Amazon. Unless they've changed the way they do things, they offer a hidden 4-for-3 special on LSAT PTs. This means if you buy 3 tests, you get the 4th free. The savings appear once you start to check out.

Plus, if you spend more than $25 or so, they offer free shipping. They call it Free Super Saver Shipping, and claim it takes 5-9 days. I never thought that it took much longer than their Standard shipping, and I've used both.

And PTs are always important. Where else are you going to get the questions to practice what you learn in your prep books? You probably don't need to be doing timed, full-length PTs in the early stages, but it's useful to take a few old tests and break up the logic games by type (e.g. lienar, grouping, etc.). Consult Pithypike's guide.

Appreciate the reply, guys. :) I guess I'll order from LSAC. The discounted prices and the free shipping makes purchasing from them more attractive. And if I find I need PTs before they arrive, I'll buy from Cambridge (what a useful resource!). :)

I'd love to buy from Amazon but since I'm located in Canada, the free shipping only applies if I purchase from Amazon.ca. I've also tried looking for the 4-for-3 special on Amazon.ca and couldn't seem to find them. I'd try Amazon.com, but I can't view any images on the site and it feels like I'm shopping blind.

Thanks for letting me know that I'll need PTs for practice. I'd thought the bibles would include exercises that would tide me over.

They do have a few problems at the end of each section, but not enough IMHO. You can also purchase questions according to problem type, which I would've found very useful if I had known before I ordered from lsac....

Oh, interesting. :) Does it work out to be cheaper than the complete PTs? But it probably means a lot of shuffling since you'd probably have to assemble a test yourself.

It depends on your study method. If you find you have difficulty with a specific problem type, you might want to purchase the relevant material to focus that type instead of digging through all of your preptests and retrieving individual questions. Cambridgelsat only uses questions from preptests 1~38 for their "LSAT question by type" offers so you'll still have the 20 newer ones to take as full PTs. I have no idea about how the cost compares to buying from LSAC but you can check cambridgelsat.com and figure it out.
