Can you apply and then take in Dec? What if they make a decision by the time we get Dec scores back? Can you negotiate scholarship if I got higher in Dec (assuming I got accepted and had 3-4 point jump in Dec?)

In the standardized test section just put December 2015 and they should hold your app until those scores come in. If you are unsure, email the admission office.

How likely do you think improving on 170 is? Anyone here have experience doing that?
Also...I've taken ALL of the practice tests. How would I study?

I got a 171, also a first-time taker and was also hoping for a few points higher (but I knew afterwards that RC killed me, and it did). My initial goal was to break 170, so I am happy but it is hard to ignore that gnawing feeling that I could have done better. That being said, I'm not planning to re-take; working full-time and with a family, it's all I can do to get my PS and various other essays written and my apps submitted without having to stress about another LSAT on top of it. If scholarships are your biggest concern, I can see why you would want to improve, but a 170 is not going to keep you from getting into any school. I'm shooting for several PI scholarships, so for me I think focusing on my essays is the best choice for me.

I talked to a friend earlier who tried to warn me that I might feel ambivalent about my score, even if it was high. Try not to beat yourself up - you really did get an excellent score.

I appreciate you sharing! That RC was the ABSOLUTE WORST. I completely understand that, it's hard to get the study time in. I'm a full time master's student and Nov is gonna be a really busy month, but I there's no way I can go to LS without a full (or close) scholarship. I'm going to apply with this LSAT score, and then send them my updated Dec one in hopes of renewed scholly consideration

That sounds like a good plan, I'm rooting for you! I went -6 on RC which was awful, but I can't say I'm terribly surprised - I had double RC and was really rooting for the second (experimental) section to be real, but so it goes. Maybe I'll see you at Mich or Penn I'm assuming you will be in a liz(a)rd suit on the day

Makes sense. Just kind of sucks because I wanted my apps in ASAP.

I was hoping that they would make a decision, and just say they accepted me and gave me $, I could turn around and say "well I retook in Dec and got 1XX could you consider more scholarship $$"

Also that is assuming they accepted me and gave me any money at all. An applicant can dream....

The fora have suggested you can contact the admissions office to evaluate your application with the current scores, but may be SOL if you are rejected.

Happy to take a 171. Breakdown was -3 rc, -8 lr and -0 lg.

Got lucky on the games on one question and dropped a few in LR I'd like to have back.

With a 3.6 171 and strong softs what kind of scholarships would be possible from the bottom of the T14? I think Columbia Chicago HYS are all out of range, no?

Columbia and Chicago might be accepts with no money. You can get a lot of money from Cornell, NW, GULC, etc.

I also want to share a little story about how on the logic games I started losing my mind because I absolutely had to use the bathroom and couldn't focus on the problems. Decided to sacrifice the time since the bathroom wasn't too far away from the testing room and I felt like I'd moved pretty quickly on that section (had finished 3 games with over ten minutes to spare). Come back from the bathroom and see the 4th game is unlike anything I'd ever practiced, no idea what to do. Dying. Guess my way through it, knowing nothing is right.

Thank christ that turned out to be the experimental section.

this story is interesting as so many high scorers do such things that could easily cost them a drop of 5-6 points, but still end up scoring high

I think it depends on where you want a full ride from.
