that red portion made me furious (even though i'm not really affected). cover the revenue gaps when those students have the most highly inelastic demand.Madoff, in his heydey, used to refuse to accept many people as clients. It was his way of maintaining his firm's mystique as selective and elite. However, near the end-- when the foundation of the pyramid began to crumble--he solicited everyone and accepted every dollar foolishlessly invested in his scam.
Law schools are following the same trajectory, as seen by the lowered admission standards, the waitlist scholarship offers, the dirty little transfer game, and, most egregiously, jacking up tuition for already-committed 2L's and 3Ls.
I think that it will take only a couple more admissions cycles, or just one more recessionary dip, for the vast majority of JD-granting schools to be seen as the approximate equivalent Madoff's investment firm. Moreover, kids who borrow to attend will be deemed, by peers and popular opinion, to be suckers who have ruined their lives, not bright yuppies about to join a noble profession.

Re: 16.9% Decrease In October Test Takers(Detailed Stats Inside)
So, I thought it would be interesting to see how this cycle compares to last year's so far on LSN.
Here are my results.
The graph compares the data from LSN last year to the data from LSN for this year. Obviously the sample could be skewed, and this cycle isn't yet complete, but I still think the results are interesting.
A few notes:
Harvards LSAT median is two full points lower than last year's.
UVA seems to have lowered it's cutoff LSAT - its 25th percentile is about 3 points lower than last year. But its 25th GPA has gone up a lot, too.
Note that according to this, most schools have increased their GPA standards. I think this might be because schools could lower their GPA standards at the end of the cycle in order to try to get some high LSAT scorers. Purely a guess though.
Thoughts? I know the usefulness of this information is limited, of course.
Edit: I actually just changed the code so that it only takes into account changes which had been made at least a year ago, so this is comparing how these schools looked at this point in last cycle to this cycle.

43 people reported being admitted off the Harvard waitlist.
(Counting people contacted for interviews, which 99% of the time historically means admission. No one reported contact and no followup admission notice).

Not sure if this is normal, but I got emails requesting me to complete surveys from a couple of schools that accepted me (and that I chose not to enroll at).

Release the DATA! Maybe it's so bad they don't want to release it and need to take a few shots first.nkp007 wrote:How long until they release the June test taker #s? I checked the website and it wasn't updated yet.

Yeah I am super anxious to see the June takers numbers. This will be the first indicator for us 2012/2013 applicants as to whether the downward trend will continue. Personally even if it was flat from this year I would be happy- any additional decrease would be a real bonus.nkp007 wrote:Release the DATA! First time the February data was mentioned in this thread was Friday, March 16 (and the test was February 11) so I'd say it'll come out relatively soon. I can't wait to see it. Fingers crossed for -5% or so.Mr. Somebody wrote:When does the data usually get released

I'm waiting to start seeing news over the next year or two about poorly/low ranked law schools being closed. There are too many really crappy law schools currently operating. I think it is inevitable that Darwin's rake will do some cleanup over the next few years.

I've gotten emails from Arizona and Wake Forest about trying to get me to fill an open spot this fall. While they aren't great schools that is still pretty crazy.

I got an email from Indiana-Bloomington this week offering merit scholarhips for enrolling this fall. They're currently ranked #26, for the record.

I've gotten in off 3 of 5 waitlists so far and it seems that there has been a decent trickle up effect since Harvard took so many off the waitlist. It's crazy to see all this movement so late in the game.

Fwiw Campos reports a top 20 school dean calling admits to get them to attend. Not an admissions dean, the actual dean. Anyone get one of these calls?
