If you're willing to whittle and be concise you can probably draw a narrative through those stories. Very similar to what I did, and going in I thought there was no way I'd be able to fit 2 pgs

I'm really boring so I have no idea what to write about. I'll think of something I guess... and I have like 9 months to edit/rewrite it anyway, so the important thing is just to start thinking about it and put something on paper.

Re: PS
and for my PS, I spent 12 weeks thinking about it, and wrote it in 2 days. then rewrote in the next few weeks. it seemed to have worked. good luck !

nobody is boring. no human being is boring. you just have to think of something to write about that you care about. what motivates you etc.RZ5646 wrote:I'm really boring so I have no idea what to write about.

Re: LORs- two things. First, if you're gunning for Stanford, your writers like you, and you're on top of your shit (unlike me), ask them to write Stanford a school-specific letter. Apparently they like that sort of thing. Also, now's an excellent time to start writing your PS, because for me both letter writers asked to see my PS while they were writing the letter. It was good because it meant I had to get off my ass and have a draft like four months before I planned on submitting, too, so I had a lot of time to rewrite and edit. I went through something like six distinct proofreader-worthy drafts and now my friends hate me because they're tired of proofing the same shit over and over, but what I ended up with was infinitely better than my first draft.

Re: The Official February 2015 Study Group
I'm a little late to this, but I'll answer anyway. Overcoming the "I go to a giant research school where the profs don't know me" isn't too hard to overcome. Just do the things that the vast majority of students don't. Choose a professor who you think will likely write a decent LOR and over the next term develop a relationship with that professor. It isn't that hard. Always go to class and engage in discussion, ask thoughtful questions, if you know the answer to a question then speak up. If you found a particular lecture interesting, let them know and thank them after class. Go to office hours and don't just ask for help on the homework or what is going to be on the exam. Instead ask specific questions about the course material, how the course material can be applied outside the scope of the class, or about the professors current research. Basically just show that you have an interest in the material. Obviously do well on exams. When you see them outside of class, make sure to be friendly and professional. Smile and address them by name, ask them how their day is going etc. This isn't that hard, and you only have to do it for the professors you want LOR from. Professors are people too. Develop a good relationship with them and they will most likely write a LOR that is flattering enough.RZ5646 wrote:The issue is I go to a giant, research-oriented school where it seems unlikely that a professor would actually say specific, superlative, eye-catching things not just for me, but for basically any undergrad student ... unless the professor is just someone who writes flattering letters, which is what I meant by it depending on their personality and the way they approach that part of their job. And since you can't read the letter first, it's a gamble.
I think Gamerish said he has the same problem.

Re: The Official February 2015 Study Group
I second the above. I go to a massive state school and in my department, I only had one professor for more than one class because of the way scheduling works. Even with this, my professors remembered me and both wrote really good letters, one even went so far as to mention things I had done outside his class that he felt had been influenced by my time in his class. (he wasn't wrong.) basically, as long as you havea decent track record and stood out a bit in class, LORs are easy to get. Most of my class sizes are 50+ and the professors were still able to do very specific letters for me. Sorry for rambling, but if you feel you haven't stuck out in a class, now is the time to do it!
ETA: doing nothing but LR prep today. I will not let LR be the reason I have to take out large loans.

Oh my god I cannot contain myself.
Office hunk who I always overhear talking about the LOLSAT.
Receptionist: how did the test go?
Office hunk: I didn't do so well. I was timing with my phone during prep and then during the exam you can only use a little watch and you can barely look at it. I was scoring really high starting out and then the last few weeks I had about a 140 as my average.
R: do you think you're going to retake it?
OH: nah I just want to get my apps out. I gotta get my rec letters in and send everything out to get it over with. Hopefully Columbia and NYU will admit me.

I'm not sure if I should talk him down. Sigh, office hunk.
