I think cavalier means that the median won't be changed/"thrown off" as much if for example, a student with a 152 were admitted. Because schools report a median rather than a mean, the 152 just gets slotted in as the lowest score and isn't averaged in, where it could do greater damage. A median is less susceptible than a mean to being thrown off by scores that are extremely low or extremely high for the school.

I know you already know this, Rigo...just explaining what I think was meant.

Reputations don't change year to year but numbers are a part of rankings which are a big part of reputation.

Well we dont really disagree on the essence of the matter; my only point was that you exaggerated, especially for the t-14: if numbers were all that mattered, then 4.0 173 would get in everywhere.

And thanks. I hope so too. Already had my JS1, so I might not need an increase to get in, but It Wouldnt hurt, that's for sure.

Haha it's not that but it's notion that 170 or above the 75ths is the be all end all deal. I know on TLS we recommend using mylsn and lsn and all those tools but that's a very very very small sample data size. For example, for somone who enters a lsat range of 165-167 and a 3.4 to a 3.5 (random figures I used for the sake of people below both 25ths at most top schools) it shows a 0% chance at uva. But with closer inspection, there's like 3-4 people who were rejected. The sample is so small that it's useless to use those tools. Just apply and have a good application and see what happens. From personal experience I beleive this mantra. I was below the averages at Harvard when applying from HS and guess what, I wrote a compelling essay and got accepted! Every single person and every statistical indicator said I was a fucking dumbass to apply. Story: apply and perfect your application.

But a 3.2GPA sucks... even though it's bio. So I'd like to be a "splitter" so they open my app. I think I'm a strong applicant with ongoing work with a legal non-profit, impressive ECs during my undergrad, and having served overseas... but that means crap if my numbers are so low I get written off off the bat.

Yeah, the thing is, we just aren't that rare. I have tons of amazing experience at a legal non profit, my experience is actually better than many of the junior attorneys in my office right now (Trial work, extensive appellate work, compelling direct service stuff). It's definitely better than most of the K-JDs who's numbers will blow mine out of the water. But I'm friends with plenty of people who have this kind of experience. There are so many of us because legal non-profits have started hiring people with good gpas and solid undergrad backgrounds for 1-3 year stints with the idea of pushing them out the door (and usually into law school) before salary increases/benefits/maternity leaves/etc. start eating into budgets. The paralegal position at most legal non-profits is becoming a dead-end. We aren't that rare since there are tons of legal non-profit people across the country applying to the top law schools. Entry level paras/non-profit people don't mean too much. Experience plus numbers matter. Don't let nobody tell you differently. And of course, RETAKE.

Even if you do decide to ED after starting the regular decision app, I'm fairly certain that you can email the signed ed contract to the admissions office and they'll gladly change your app status to ed.

But don't give them that satisfaction.

May not mean much... but there are also a contingent of people applying with nothing but good numbers.
