Apparently the Pearl is, in the softness of its lead, somewhere in between the Blackwing and Blackwing 602. Sounds like a sweet spot to me.

Sadly, only one:(

But I actually forget that I'm going to S. America again in a month :D So I won't have to order them after all.

That's awesome that you're going to S. America. Except, you will lose valuable LSAT study time :|

Is this not the most beautiful thing you've ever seen? Brand new Palomino HB, sharpened with the Kum Long Point.

Image

I thought the shavings looked like a flower. Perfectly unbroken. Love that damn sharpener. And look at that pencil point!

I have issues, and I whole-heartedly blame this thread.

I'm a sharpener noob. Have you tried the Palomino Blackwing long point sharpener? I just ordered it. Should I have gotten the Kum brand instead?

That pencil shaving is stunning. Your Palomino pencil looks really good too. I really like the blue color.

On a side note, I recently got my Blackwing 602s. They write like my hand is getting its dick sucked.

Got a White Pearl eraser today (papermate). It erases like a dream. I think I will cop those pearl Blackwings for game day.

Nvm, I looked at the pictures again and it seems to be the same sharpener, just different colors.

Unfortunately.

Random note for all of my fellow Palomino fans: I had a chance to try out the 602s and the HB on a scantron sheet the other day, and while I don't know if the scantron was the same as the one we'll be having on test day (it seemed similar to my February sheet, but who can remember exactly?), the 602s smeared an unpleasant amount. The HB also smeared a tiny bit when I lay a lot of graphite down, so you really don't need to do the obsessively darkening thing that some of us (*cough* ..such as myself) are often tempted to do. One "light" go is all you need.

Thought that would be worth noting. I'd hate for the 602 diehards to be horrified by smearing on test day.

That woud be different if we could change our vote. As i have upgraded from Ticons, to Palomino HBs.

Also, so it is safe to assume the graphite darkness of a 602 is sufficient for the scantron? and by that measure will the pearl blackwings be sufficient as well?

602s are definitely dark enough. Potential concerns that they're too dark/soft though.

I'd love to hear a review of the Pearl versus 602 from one of you guys; anyone buy a pack?

But the pearl is softer/darker than the 602. Isn't it?

Dre, you should know that everyone started with the Ticonderogas, but many of those in this thread have learned a lot about pencils since the initial vote.

I want to order them, but I can't justify spending $20.00 on pencils when I just bought the palomino HBs... What do you suggest I do? Is there a noticeable difference?

I can't give you any advice as far as the Pearl goes; haven't tried. I'm personally happy with the Palomino HB, and won't be devastated if it turns out the Pearl is a good alternative. I've actually ordered a backup box of HBs so I know I'll have enough on test day.

Ya, I may need to order more, Ive only taken 1 PT and some drilling sections and I'm practically half way down on 3 of the pencils. This sharpener, the blackwing, is effective at not only sharpening the tip to a dangerous point, but also at eating up more of the pencil than I ever imagined. If I need to order more pencils I think I'm going to go with the Blackwing Pearls, What is your experience with blackwing and blackwing 602?

Also, how many pencils are you going strapped with? And where are you going to put them? I dont want to go in with sharpened pencils only to notice i have dull points.

Edit: Also, is it for sure that the blackwing variaties are suitable for scantron?

The Kum long point sharpeners (same as the Blackwing sharpener) are indeed great, and indeed use up a lot of pencil, fast.

I don't think the Blackwing would work for the test (definitely too soft or light or dark or hard.. I don't remember--haven't really touched it since I got it--but it's too far off from a #2 to really work). I personally will not be using the 602 on test day, and don't recommend it. My concern is smearing on the scantron sheet.

I'm probably going to bring about 10 pencils. Hopefully more, if I have any left. Also going to bring a couple of lesser pencils (Mirado Black Warriors) that are okay enough if I need backups, but crummy enough that I won't mind lending them out if anyone needs a pencil. I guess I'm just going to put them on the desk. Make sure you've got at least one dull pencil! Great for bubbling.
