This panic-inducing revelation motivated me to finally set up a non-couch workspace. 45 days is a good time to get organized, right? Riiiggghhhttt?appind wrote:Pozzo wrote:45 days, y'all

just finished up PT 71. went -2 on LG because I had to rush the last game. first LR was a joke, finished with 5.5 minutes left. second LR and RC weren't too bad even though they had 5 stars on 7Sage, so either I crushed it or got crushed without knowing it
. the curve is -13 so I'm hoping I break out of the 173-175 place I'm in. gonna BR tomorrow and post my score.

Today - two more sets of each section. Did a set of each this morning - 0 LG, 0 v familiar RC, -1 LR. PT tomorrow.
I feel like I should spend less time on TLS to avoid distraction. (And make up for it on the waiter thread...)
45 days. We've got this.

Is there anyone here (doubt it) that doesn't finish RC sections on time, and is actually just going to focus on getting 3 passages done and all correct? I read on 7sage that if you can't do all 4 passages in time, even after tons of practice, that getting perfect accuracy on 3 passages is a second option. I also saw some small tips about skimming the 4th passage for questions that directly ask you to go to a line and you just try to figure it out. Or questions that ask about the authors view, you can try skimming for that.
I might have to accept the fact that my RC skills are just not on fleek, as the youngsters are saying now a days.

44 days.
Have yet to do a single PT :/ Work/life kept getting in the way, but am confident I'll do marginally more studying over these next 44 days than I will over the last 44.
But no matter, I've already made my choice. The only way left for me is straight ahead.
Have read the RC Bible, am reading the LG bible, and the LR Bible came in the mail at work today!

This might seem like obvious advice...but something I've been gradually getting into is applying my RC note-taking strategy to all forms of reading I do: work & pleasure. That may help!TheMikey wrote:Is there anyone here (doubt it) that doesn't finish RC sections on time, and is actually just going to focus on getting 3 passages done and all correct? Yah I get what you mean. I try to do this whenever I read the daily ny law journal. I don't really annotate in RC so I just try to focus on using the memory method.greatspirit wrote:This might seem like obvious advice...but something I've been gradually getting into is applying my RC note-taking strategy to all forms of reading I do: work & pleasure. Last PTs, I've had trouble having enough time to get to the last passage (I'd get there with about 5 minutes left...so about 2-3 short of where I should be.)TheMikey wrote:Yah I get what you mean. My last PT, I did the quick skimming and got all of the ones I actually answered correct. I think the key is to make sure that, if you are only going to get to three with 100% accuracy, that you don't waste your time with the five question passage. It could depend on how well you can do if you take 10-11 minutes per passage though regardless of difficulty (personally, I can typically get 100% right regardless of difficulty in 10-12 minutes).
That said, it can make sense, but it probably makes more to try and focus on getting reading time down. For me, I think I need to not worry if I miss one question - i.e. not spend 3 minutes making a judgement call on a question.

What's taking up most of your time? The initial reading or answering the questions?TheMikey wrote:Is there anyone here (doubt it) that doesn't finish RC sections on time, and is actually just going to focus on getting 3 passages done and all correct? Re: The Official September 2016 Study Group - WAKE ME UP WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS
Initially I guess both. It takes me about 4 mins to complete a passage, and then I find myself on the questions for about 6-7 mins, no matter if it has 5 or 8 questions. I try myself to go off of memory on the questions, but even then I hesitate a ton which eats up all of my time.Justice4Birdperson wrote:What's taking up most of your time? Re: The Official September 2016 Study Group - WAKE ME UP WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS
some tips I think are useful on timing for RC:
timing is similar to LG. easier passages should take less time than the hard ones. I think some people assume 8:45 on each but that's just not a good strategy.
most questions should take a minute.
focus mostly on structure, not content. sometimes all you need to know about a complex viewpoint is that the author disagrees with it.
do a very quick summary after each paragraph and at the end of the passage.
your understanding of the point of the passage should develop WHILE you read, not after you're done reading the whole thing.
if you're pressed for time, do the questions that are 'smaller' first, they're usually easier.
when you're done with a passage, quickly look over the whole thing to get a sense of where everything is. when I'm done, I'll just look over the whole thing really quick top to bottom (like 3 seconds).
that's all I can think of and this is just stuff I do that has helped me!

I think the most dangerous thing one can do tends to be when you just get stuck and linger on a question in RC... it's very easy to get hung up on one and be like, 'Oh, if I think about it for a min or two more I know I'll get it.' I feel like at some point you just need to cut your loss, tick one, and move on. Come back after if you have time.
Was feeling super burned out, absolutely crushed JY's recommended time on a game I haven't seen before, and am going to finish out these LGs before I head home for the night.

lol just like JY says: if you find yourself spending too much time on a single question, even if you get it right, LSAC has already won because they ate up your time.proteinshake wrote:especially since there are 27 questions on RC!34iplaw wrote:I think the most dangerous thing one can do tends to be when you just get stuck and linger on a question in RC... it's very easy to get hung up on one and be like, 'Oh, if I think about it for a min or two more I know I'll get it.' of course this makes sense only if you run out of time on the section

AR will be my end. I feel like I'm flying through it but struggle to make it to the first question of the last game almost every time. I've taken 24 tests and have yet to make it through an entire AR section. And it's not like I'm getting hung up on how to diagram them, I'm just freaking slow I guess :\

Pretty sure I end up having to make an educated guess on at least a few RC questions per section, just because there's not enough time to 100% verify the answer for every question, and I lose many more points by running out of / short on time than making a few educated guesses.

Re: The Official September 2016 Study Group - WAKE ME UP WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS
What helped me with LG timing was timing myself for a single LG section (stopwatch, and not stopping at 35 mins), and if I wen't over 35 mins or even missed 1 question on 1 game, I would do the entire section again. Usually this helped me get below 30 mins and a -0 on that section. Even though it's inflated, I do believe that this helped me get from only being able to do 3 games in the time allotted, to actually being able to finish the section.Instrumental wrote:AR will be my end.
