The more I'm researching, the more I'm seeing that those who get rich from practicing law are those who have private practices, which isn't something I'm interested in for at least 5-10 years after I graduate. What type of law are you thinking of practicing?bmathers wrote:b/c it is the guaranteed path to riches, duhhh. Cooley '20Espadas wrote:Ok so quick change of subject from the LSAT....

I guess the short answer is I'm interested in legal theory/philosophy/practice and also in participating in the shaping of how people's rights are recognized, even if it's on the individual level. Especially interested in constitutional law/defense.Espadas wrote:Ok so quick change of subject from the LSAT....

Serious answer, I'm kind of in a tossing my cap over the wall situation. Law school was the best of several options after a few bad breaks, so I trusted the advice of a few former commanders and took the LSAT, and then when I got a great score I just decided to go for it. My family has never had a lawyer in it so I'm learning everything as I go, but the more I learn the more excited I am for everything. My undergraduate degree was in international security studies, which is a pretty legal heavy field, so at the very least I'm not relearning all of the vocabulary haha. If nothing else, law school can get me back into the military which was Plan A for my life (law school is Plan ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha).Espadas wrote:Ok so quick change of subject from the LSAT....

This is pretty much my reason, as well. Unfortunately, Constitutional Law isn't concentrated on much beyond Con Law in the second year.Sarastro wrote:I guess the short answer is I'm interested in legal theory/philosophy/practice and also in participating in the shaping of how people's rights are recognized, even if it's on the individual level. Interesting. My uncle was in the Air Force, then went to Emory Law and practiced in Atlanta for a few decades before his stroke. He just recently passed away, but talking to his son about it, also a former law student, sort of inspired me and helped me realize that I could.BirdLawExpert wrote:Serious answer, I'm kind of in a tossing my cap over the wall situation. I was being facetious/sarcastic. I am looking at starting out with probably civil law, and eventually want to create a niche with disability law.Espadas wrote:The more I'm researching, the more I'm seeing that those who get rich from practicing law are those who have private practices, which isn't something I'm interested in for at least 5-10 years after I graduate. I took my LSATs and law school is certainly the road with much less obstacles to take, but I am considering a complete 180 and going to get my doctorate in physical therapy. The only thing with that is, I will need to take 15-20 credits of pre-reqs that my undergrad degree didn't require (I has sec edu, social studies) and prepping for the GRE. I am going to start volunteering in a PT clinic by my house to get a feel for the day-to-day. My LSAT score will go a long way in determining what I do as well. 160+ and I'm going to law school without looking back. (Back story, my father has a successful practice and is looking at retiring in 5 years, so I have always been around the law).
Basically, what scares me about being an attorney is I would probably go into a depression sitting at a desk all day. I need to be active, at least for some of it.

I understand that. My cousin studied Environmental Law, and ended up not taking the bar after my uncle's stroke (I believe he was going to work for his dad), and then decided to go into IT. Now he works at a school and gets summers off, so he travels the States and hikes, mountain climbs, all that fun stuff.bmathers wrote:I was being facetious/sarcastic. One of my best friends is a PT who works on the sports medicine side of things (he was recently on the sidelines at several Copa America games). He loves it, and if you're interested in it I definitely recommend giving it some serious consideration. Pretty much all of my friends where I live now are PTs and all of them are happy people.bmathers wrote:I was being facetious/sarcastic. The only problem is job progression; it's a very difficult career in that regard. If you're someone who needs constantly evolving goals to be satisfied, there won't be many positions in the PT world that satisfy that need. There's definitely job progression salary-wise, but your responsibilities aren't constantly changing like in some career fields.

Thank you. I don't remember much of him before the stroke, as he lived for another 21 years. JAG always interested me a lot. I have some family in it and it always sounded fascinating and very rewarding. From what I gather it's pretty selective, though, right? I haven't looked too closely into it, but do you know anything about the acceptance rates for any branch's JAG vs., say, biglaw? [Edit: or direct me towards any sources that I couldn't find on google, assuming I get off my ass?]BirdLawExpert wrote:Serious answer, I'm kind of in a tossing my cap over the wall situation. Also, I asked this earlier, but it's a lot quieter now. I'm patent bar eligible, but would taking it affect admissions/$$$ much? Or would it just be more of a tie-breaker if I'm on a wait list?
